  1. I'll be 60 in 2020 - gulp! We've cruised QV and QE but not done a TA on QM. Unless the lottery obliges, I'll still be working and stuck with the school holidays - 2 weeks at Easter, from end of June to middle of August and a week in October. Given we've always been stuck with those parameters, we've don't want to do the Mediterranean again. Any brilliant recommendations/suggestions for a maximum 14-17ish nights? The actual birthday doesn't come in any of those dates but I'll just designate a specific day to be the day!

    Thanks

I don't know about 2020 but there is a very interesting TA in 2019 going north up to Iceland before crossing the Atlantic down through Canada to New York. Look at M921 - I think I fancy that myself.

  2. I personally would think, it may be better if you met your family at Red Hook terminal and go to the Brooklyn Heights area for your day out. That way you would be able to spend more time with then and have no worries about getting back to the ship on time. I have seen people failing to get back to the ship on time thro’ traffic problems, when your next port of call could be Southampton. What ever you decide I am sure it will not be last cruise, just enjoy you special trip.😉

On such occasions I tend to use the Cunard bus into Manhattan, (I think it stops near Macy's) usually plenty of time to meet up and have lunch with friend(s) and get the bus back to the ship. (The ship will always wait for the last bus)

  3. I never notice the shoes that people wear as I am enjoying what is going on and don't spend my time staring at the floor.

Maybe when sitting down in the Commodore Club after dinner - people will notice the shoes.

  4. Lunch is more casual, dinner is more formal.

But I have found over the years cruising with Cunard the American males are not to keen on formality, but their ladies love it, and the men, in the main do not.

You have lost me too. On board ship (as a solo) I personally always go for a table of 8.

On land, when I travel alone, I would always take some form of reading material along with me when I dine, whether it be a very formal or more casual restaurant.

  5. I asked Andrew Stuthers about the QG menu shrinking in the Q&A. He denied it was. Searching in this forum and across internet (beyondships 2012). There is no doubt it has. How he can deny this is unbelievable.

Maybe (and I question it) the menu is a little shorter but as one can order off menu then the availability of what one desires is not diminished at all. I wonder if the number of those ordering off menu has increased if the OP's assumption that the listed menu has shrunk.

  6. My husband and I just booked a seven day transatlantic on the QM2. We decided to go out and book the Queen’s Grill, assuming this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We would love to learn what is special about Queens Grill. Any tips for us for maximizing the experience?

Depends if you have chosen to dine as two or on a larger table but if a larger table it can be really pleasant to organise a pre dinner drinks gathering in your suite - the butler will organise everything with you and it can be a very pleasant special time and hopefully reciprocated by some of your other table mates.

  7. Well, I do tend to take home the paint stripper we commoners get. But do tell me, do you do a lot of paintwork around your house or do you actually get decent whisky in QG? ;p

Otherwise I'd assume that the crew is not allowed to drink hard liquor on board.

If you ask nicely you pretty well get what you want.

  8.

Whilst you eat in a separate restaurant with no sittings and have accessbto the Grills lounge and sunbathing area, there are no perks such as reserved seating in the theatre or complementary cocktail hour. However you do get a complementary bar set up in your suite.

The Grills do offer a separate Afternoon Tea in one of the Grills areas (depends on ship) which in our opinion is a much more leisurely affair than the Queens room.

Butlers can be brilliant - our last one organised a quite elaborate drinks party for 8 in our suite prior to dinner.

  9. The "4 D's" were very good again in the Queens Room and as Hattie reported the room was packed. In addition the dance floor was full of people either dancing or singing along with the group. I'm sure these guys will be back on board the fleet in the future - they attracted a strong following.

Disembarkation was pretty faultless, no big queues straight off and to the CPS parking bays to recover our vehicle.

One of the calmest cruises we have ever done - thoroughly enjoyed it once again.

  10. Forgot to mention we took afternoon tea in the Princess Grill dining room. For us it was far better than being in the lounge. The sandwiches were served separately and you chose exactly what you wanted and then moved on to the “cake tier” with a selection of savouries, cakes and the scones with clotted cream. Altogether very well presented and delightful, I’m glad we skipped lunch.

  11. Well yesterday was my birthday and it was a wonderful day. Started well with cards that my wife brought along and to cap it off a birthday card from Cunard.

Our butler organised a wonderful drinks party in our cabin with all the couples on our table of 8. La Rosa (the butler) did a great job of a selection of hors d’oevres, a cheese board and a huge “bucket” full of beers and soft drinks.

Dinner was traditionally served caviar, a fish course of sole Veronique, and a main of a superb whole duck a l’orange with crispy skin. Finished off with a cake for us all with a Queen Victoria ship on it. Two other birthday cakes followed in QG - amazing!! The evening finished off with the 10:30 show featuring the “Four D’s” - a sort of Jersey Boys group of 4 - brilliant - and a standing ovation after a final rendition from Les Mis. They are performing again tonight in the Queens Room.

  12. We are on board and the weather isn’t too bad so far, a little sun at times.

Looked around Brittania Club restaurant and it is beautiful - better than Queens Grill I think although we did get our embarkation lunch. Why do they not offer that for Club I wonder?

At a loss as to understand why they do not have table and chairs on the QG balcony (particularly the Q6’s with their quite deep balcony). Removed at refit I am told - when they changed the furniture.

  13. In a couple of weeks time my Wife & I will be off on the Q.V. in a QG Penthouse.

My question is, laying aside what I might read in literature received, what sort of service will we really expect to receive?

I quite realise that this could vary in a little detail from Butler to Butler but there must be basic services which he or she would undertake. I assume the Butler would have an Assistant for the more mundane tasks.

We would not wish to cause any embarrassment by asking the Butler to undertake a task outside his remit.

As you say, butlers vary, but there is no harm in asking for whatever you think is reasonable. I have had a butler serving a Q1 with less initiative than one in a Q5 - they all vary. The new idea of a separate butler access to a Q1 on QV is a brilliant idea.

My key card wouldn't work once - the butler let me in and then went down to reception and got me a new card (all without asking). Frankly there should be no problem in him/her getting your shoes polished - just what one would expect in a good good hotel.

    Have fun.

  14. Hello. Got a deposit on the Queen Mary cruise this summer. Not too late to cancel and recoup my deposit. Really excited about going, but reading the reviews (including of the Grills which we booked) and we’re now having second thoughts. Is the ship really plagued with issues such as lack of hot water, bad WiFi and intermittent toilet system as well as bad food, even in the Grills (folks say it’s bland)? I mean the Grills is not inexpensive and I’m OK to put up with a few glitches but at that price point there is a minimum standard I am expecting. Thoughts welcome.

Whilst not disrespecting other's comments, I have to say I have not personally suffered these reported problems (well the Wi-Fi could be a bit faster) and Queens Grill has usually met my expectations even if you do have to occasionally tell them if it is not to your total satisfaction. I'm in QG at the end of the month and sincerely hope and expect that all will be well.

  15. We'll be on QV for 4 day trip to Hamburg and back next week.

According to the Hamburg Cruise Terminal website we are due to sail at 7pm from Steinwerder.

How long will it take to sail along the Elbe ? Any particular highlights to look out for ?

Any other comments about this trip ?

    Thanks in advance

We should benefit with daylight because the clocks will have changed.

Airbus Factory can be interesting if there are some movements but on a Sunday night I guess activity may be limited, but you never know - I have seen flights from the North Wales Broughton site on a Sunday evening.

  16. We were on QE in October and sounds as if we had a below par butler but being our first time in QG didnt know any difference. We asked about brandy as it was not on the list and was told no so ticked the whisky forgetting the brand but it was not the one that was delivered to our suite we had Famous Grouse and at most we had 2 or 3 cans of Heineken in the fridge and when I drunk 2 on different days they were replaced but nothing extra. The only thing he seemed keen on leaving was bottles of water and I think at one time we had 4 litre bottles lined up.

Some butlers are really great with initiative but with some you have to be a little more demanding. I rarely have the brands that are on the list and have never been refused.

Lemon slices, lime slices delivered for the Gin & Vodka and a good stock of tonics.

Same sort of service whether I'm in a Q1 or a Q6 - ask nicely and you should be able to obtain what you require.

  17. Thanks all for your replies. I had hoped the Cunard board would have a cabin review section, like on the Celebrity board, where people note what they liked or disliked about their specific cabin (number).

In the end I found very few cabin options for my cruise and ended up booking the furthest aft balcony cabin, next to a suite. Maybe some of the suite will rub off on us

Perhaps they will invite you in for drinks(yn):cocktail::champagne-toast::whiskey-glass::tropical-drink:

  18. You will get 1 x 1 litre bottle of spirits per person chosen from a list in your suite on you arrival and will be delivered by your butler either later that day or the next day. With regards to the mini bar/refrigerator it will be stocked with coke/ 7up/ tonic water/bottled water and a lager which will be replenished daily as used.

Just a comment: As a solo traveller I have always had the two bottles of spirits.

  19.

Do any of you have any positive or uniquely Cunard experiences that have left a long-term impression on you?

My first Transatlantic on the Queen Victoria - very special as with my daughter as she emigrated to Canada

My first Transatlantic on the Queen Elizabeth - very rough seas but again with my daughter -first time in QG

My first Transatlantic on the Queen Mary 2 - pretty rough again but a great table at meal times in QG

Commodore Club takes some beating for after dinner drinks, especially on QV and QE

The first time we occupied a Q1 on QE

Captain Wells is great very time. (As Bruce would say - "He's my favourite" Captain
