  1. Day Two/Part Two:

After the taxi took us back to the port, we shopped around for a while at the port's entrance looking for something unique and interesting, rather than just the typical trinkets. We struck gold when we found a local artist painting tiles and ceramic skulls. He does most of his work with his finger, then uses a finishing brush for the details. To show us, he took a business card sized piece of paper and created a painting in about 15 seconds and handed it to us for free. We selected a few pieces we really liked and the pricing seemed reasonable for artwork, and happily paid him. These were the only souvenirs we bought the whole trip. We really don't shop much on vacations, except when there is something really cool we feel we can add to our home, and this was one of those exceptions.

Coming up: Mayan Calanders, Progreso, Chichen Itza, Mayan Calanders, comedians, Mayan Calanders, a long bus ride, Mayan Calanders, an odd encounter with our cabin steward... oh, and did I mention Mayan Calanders?

I have enjoyed your review. We'll be taking this same cruise for Fall Break.

We, too, do not get into souvenir shopping but I do want something from one of the ports that represents the location, culture or artwork. The artist you found - do you know his name or if he looked like he was a regular at the Cozumel port? I usually try to find something I can hang on my Christmas tree even if the object isn't really an ornament. --any add'l info about that vendor/artist would be helpful :)

Chichen Itza - we were going to book that excursion. Guess it's back to researching the other Mayan ruin options at Progresso. On a previous cruise, we visited ruins in Belize that were amazing (complete with machine gun toting soldiers to keep us safe & Guatemalan illegals away from the tourists) so the bar is set pretty high for our family. Sorry your excursion wasn't what you had hoped.

Once again thanks for the trip report!

  2.

If you think of any questions just let me know.

MexicanMama, I hope that you have more items to share from your cruise.

    1) So from your MDR review, does that mean you prefer the set time for dinner than "Anytime dinning"? And that the MDR would be a better experience that way?

    2) Eagerly waiting to see if you have any thoughts on about kid / teen activities. Specifically, if your 16 yr olds did the teen club or their own thing. We'll be on the Elation this Fall Break - Oct 3 and my 16 DD is already asking if I think there will be people to make friends with & hang out with.

Thanks! I have enjoyed your review so far.

  3. There is a parking garage that has a shuttle to bring you to the port when my husband and I cruised last year that is what we did. It was $10 day not bad at all.

Thanks Edaigle1977 - I was getting ready to search for posts that shared port parking options out of NOLA :D

  4. No view on Magic or Wonder. It is a series of steam rooms ranging from very mild to quite hot and strong with various sorts of seats and scents. There are also specialty showers (when they are working). On the new ships' date=' there are hot tubs and great views.

It is a lovely place to relax. However, it is wrong that they charge the same on all ships as the new ships offer MUCH more![/quote']

Thanks so much for the info.

  5. I can already see this thread taking an odd turn, but I'm going to share a tip I read somewhere:

If you're carrying an expensive camera, a camera bag makes it a target for thieves (especially in European cities). A diaper bag makes a good alternative: They tend to be padded /protective and have pockets for your extra lenses, etc. But no thief is even remotely interested in stealing what appears to be a bag of extra diapers and Goldfish crackers.

Love the tip! I do not like my camera bag at all. The standard ones are not cute or fun looking! I will start looking for a diaper bag! Those have gotten so stylish in recent years since I carried them last - 12 yrs ago! :D

  6. Just tossing in my 2 cents: Only 1 cruise to my name but my children & I used layards. Hubby has pockets so he didn't. We used some freebie ones we had around the house. On our next cruise, two of us will be using laynards again. The kids thought it was great to be hands-free. My DD will probably have a small crossbody type pouch so she has somewhere to put her card & I-phone (to use to take pictures).

  7. Interesting. And do you also do the same at hotels, motels and resorts?

    Hank

Yes, actually every year we create door signs for our church group when we attend a national convention. We do something cute but no names that identifies our individual members. We stay at a very nice hotel & convention center & all the groups do this.

Personally when we go to Disney we do this too. It helps the kids find the room & not beat on the wrong door  when we return late in the evening.

BUT I do not believe I will be doing this on my cruise in 2 weeks. I may change my mind the 1st time one of my kids knocks on the wrong door. It always happens.
