Thanks everyone for your input.
We will definitely consider the hire car senario.
-
Can anyone point me in the best direction for car hire when we arrive in Tauranga. We would like to drive to Rotorua but don't want to be tied down to the ship excursions.
Thanks

Thanks for all this excursion information .... it's going to take me from now to October to sort out what I want to do

Can you take water or soft drink cans on the New Zealand cruises?
-
Could you please add my party to this post.
We (2 couples) are sailing from Sydney to New Zealand onboard the Magestic Princess on September 30th 2019 and returning on the 13th October.
Looking forward to meeting other cruisers

We hired an RV from Anchorage after our cruise and Denali land tour and spent 2 weeks driving around Alaska and the Yukon.
I'd thoroughly recommend this as we could stop when we wanted for as long as we wanted and the RV parks along the way we're wonderful, but there is a lot of free camping places which would have been ideal as well.

AIP whereabouts can I see your photos?

WOW I've just come across this post and can't wait to read more.
I'm from Mandurah in the south west of Western Australian and we had our first Alaskan experience in 2014 when we cruised north from Vancouver to Whittier then an inland 3 day tour up to Denali. After that fantastic experience we picked up an RV in Anchorage and spent 14 days touring Alaska and into the Yukon and south through BC.
I completely fell in love with Alaska and just can't get enough of it. I love watching anything on Foxtel (cable) and reading anything I can about it.
I love Alaska: the last frontier and am thrilled to read about your visit and so wish I'd known about it before we did our trip. I didn't realise the homestead was so close to Homer. On the show it looks like it's in the middle of nowhere.
I'm loving reading about your daily adventures.
Our Alaskan trip was meant to be a once in our lifetime / cross it off the bucket list adventure, but after our holiday we decided we just have to do it again. Unfortunately, as you can imagine it's on the other side of the earth and so far away for us. At least 30 hours flight time and that's if we go as direct as possible .... But I'll just have to settle for my Alaskan shows and your blogs.

We did the Food and Wine cruise from Fremantle on the Pacific Eden and yes, most of the timetabled activities that they put on cost extra. This was a bit disappointing.
We had an awesome time and I would definitely book again, but maybe look at some other options such as the comedy cruise

We were on Crown Princess for their last Alaskan cruise for the season and left Vancouver on August 30 and arrived in Whittier on September 7. The weather was awesome and we were fortunate. The best thing was as we arrived at John Hopkins Glacier, the naturalist on board told us we were very lucky to be seeing it. Apparently they close the entrance to the bay until September 1st as this is the time the seals use the area for birthing their pups. As the cruise ship season ends mid September, that only gives a two week period for cruise ships to enter the bay. So as you can see we were very lucky.

Just disembarked the Eden today and yes they had a Pandora shop and yes they had a sale

We took 12 cans onboard in our hand luggage and then found we had the cool drinks package already on our booking that they didn't tell us about so we bought 20 cans home. No idea why we weren't told about the drinks package. It was only while chatting to another guest that she mentioned it. Our card had the Cokecola logo on it.

Thanks for your report. We are travelling on a short cruise out from Fremantle in April and looking forward to it. We have cruised on Star Virgo (4 times) and Princess Crown in Alaska before
-
Thank you Tickford

1. Can anyone tell me what the parking situation is for Fremantle port for a P&O short 3 night cruise?
2. On the cruise that goes out from Fremantle, does the casino open once it is in international waters?
3. Are the duty free shops open on board?
Thank you in anticipation.

I arranged a surprise 7 day cruise from Singapore for our 25 wedding anniversary. My husband knew I was hesitant to cruise because of sea sickness but all our friends had cruised and loved it.
On the day if the party I worded up my three daughters that 'our' gift was in a gift bag and that when the speeches happened this was what they were to give him.
In the bag was a certificate from the travel agent congratulating is on 25 years and lots of pamphlets about the ship and the destinations.
That went all well and good and he seemed very surprised but after 3 days I said to him you didn't seem very excited. He answered .... 'Who am I going with because you hate cruises!'
Well I told him I was risking my safety to show him how much I loved him!
Anyway we are about to go on our 6th cruise and just celebrated our 35 wedding anniversary and I haven't regretted it one bit.

Mine is actually 22 April on Pacific Eden ex Freo 3 night cruise to no where
-
Could some one give me some info about the drink packages on Eden?
-
Disappointing to read of your Eden experience.
With 5 cruises on Starcruises and Princess Lines .... I have booked a sample cruise on P&O Eden for April and now thinking the money would have better put towards another holiday.

Could you add me to April 2016 ... Pacific Eden ... 3 night Cruise to nowhere from Fremantle

Nice review - great to hear some good things about the Crown as she has beengetting a bit of bad press lately. We will be on her Jan 9th for the 10 day Mexico trip and really looking forward to a relaxing 10 days after the hectic holidays.
We were on the Crown in September (Alaska) and we loved it!
What bad press has she been getting?

Loved the report SailorJack .... Had me in tears laughing and my family coming to see what was so funny.

We're planning a cruise to Alaska early June. How soon would it be advisable to book excursions through Princess? I don't want to be wait-listed for a tour. Thanks.
We booked the Mendenhall glacier helicopter and summer dog sled camp tour as early as we could for our September 2014 cruise, mainly because there were limited spaces and I didn't want to miss out. I researched other companies and felt the Princess excursion was the most suitable for us.
In saying all that .... Weather dictated our excursion and because of heavy rain that week the dog camp part of the excursion was inaccessible so the tour was cancelled. Princess gave us the option of booking another ... Just to the glacier, which we did and it was the best thing ever.
It certainly was one of the most memorial aspects of our 8 week trip!

The shampoo and conditioner container is on the wall in the shower.
It’s a basic quality so I suggest if you bring your own if you want something better.
