  1. I just got back from sailing the Gem and no one cared if my husband smoked cigars in any of the smoking sections.

The Bali Hai Bar (deck 13, overlooking the pool, accessible by fwd and mid elevators) is all smoking, even the lounge chairs on the other side of the glass that separates the bar on either side.

Casino (deck 6 mid/fwd), I believe the entire Casino, I saw ash trays everywhere.

Corona Cigar Bar (deck 6 mid), just outside of the casino.

Deck 7 - Port Side - The entire length of deck 7 is smoking except for a small portion in the middle where the lounge chairs are (just outside of the mid elevators)

  2. Ship - NCL GEM

    Deck - 8

    Stateroom # - 8102

Stateroom Category – OK Obstructed Oceanview - Accessible

Starboard or Port Side - Starboard

Quiet Stateroom? – Nice and quiet - heard some kids in the hallway on the first day but nothing afterwards. This room is at the end, no neighbors on 3 sides of the room.

Was stateroom a connecting stateroom? - No

    Balcony View? – N/A

    Balcony Size?N/A

    Was wind a problem? N/A

If an aft cabin, was soot a problem?N/A

Any specific problems with this cabin? No

Any other comments?Being an accessible cabin it was a great size, probably 50% larger than a regular one. The "Obstructed View" wasn't exactly obstructed, just the lower portion of the window - it was great! I had read to adjust the beds in a backwards L shape and highly recommend it! Makes it so much more roomy! This room is parallel to the starboard deck, not like 90% of the rooms on the ship. Since it was an accessible room the commode was raised and if you are 5'4" like me, or less, the it may be tricky lol. The room was close to the aft elevator and stairs, but not close enough to hear the elevators or passengers.

  3. 7 months ago on the breakaway we ate there 3 times. the food was good! all three times the service was sloooooooowwww. the first two times we were there the place was all but empty, so i cannot figure that one out. the last time we went it was packed at breakfast so taking longer is understandable.

Just off the GEM, decided to update... I have the same review for O'Sheehans (or Houlihans as hubby kept mistakenly calling it lol) as the one on the Breakaway... Went 3 times, good food, slow service, empty restaurant (not at the bar), won't keep me from going there again though :)

Edited to add: I wasn't a fan of the menu never changing.

  4. Thank you, and I will!

Got back Saturday and my previous list is pretty accurate!

  5. Thank you for the input!

What information I really looking for is if I can use the scooter on the island, as in, are the pathways concrete (or wood or equivalent)?

I know I cant use the scooter on the beach in the sand but wasn't sure if there was a layer of sand on the walkways.

FWIW - I can get off the scooter and walk onto the boat, and as long as my scooter isn't over 100 lbs they will carry it down the step or two to the tender from the ship.

  6. Has anyone done Great Stirrup Cay (GSC) with a Scooter?

My cruise is on 4/21 (so close!) and I don't know if i should attempt it or not. I would hate to get sand caught up in anything mechanical on the scooter so I am wondering what the paths are made of (wood, concrete, sand?)

  7. I also am a big guy but was very active until I broke both legs and developed a growth on my spine that creates severe pain when I walk. Yes, I can stand and walk short distances, but my electric wheelchair gives me the mobility to go out to events, to cruise, to do many activities that seem normal to most people but are impossible for some of us. I can sit at home, or I can get out of the house with my wheelchair. You can look at me and think the reason I'm using a wheelchair is because I'm fat but you would not be knowing the truth.

Same here, i am a "curvy" gal using a scooter and people probably assume i'm using it because i'm fat and lazy. I was so afraid of what people would think when i started using one (almost wrapped an ace bandage around my knee for a kind of "proof"), but hey, now i realize it's THEIR problem, not mine!

You would think in this day and age, especially with all the talk about wheelchair and scooter using, that people would realize that not all disabilities are evident.

  8. Anyone know of a way to snorkel in glasses? Snokling used to be my favorite part of the cruise......but u can't wear contacts any more.

They do make prescription lenses in Goggles (~$16) and in Regular Masks (~$40 and up). There are a couple of brands that sell prescription fit ins for the full face masks.

I bought a full face mask for my upcoming cruise (in 8 days!) so i cannot wait to use it. Been looking at them and reading about them for over a year now. The prices have really come down on them too (~$20 to upwards of $100). I really hope i love it because i am not bringing a backup mask and snorkel lol.

  9. If you purchase a cabin within 20 days of sailing, is there still a chance that you will receive an upgrade email? Does anyone know, from experience, how long after you booked you received the email? Just curious. In the past, I've always contacted the upsell # about 10 days out, but the upsell number has been retired, correct? Thanks! Pat

Last year i booked on 8/28 for a 9/9 sailing. on 8/29 i received and upgrade offer and on 8/30 it was accepted.

Unfortunately hurricane irma cancelled that cruise! :(

  10. There is a possibility that your cruise consultant doesn't work for NCL in that capacity anymore. On my last cruise I had three different people call me and tell me they were my cruise consultant. I know they were different people because they followed up by both email and regular mail. I always call the 800 number and have always had good experiences with that. On an aside one of the cruise consultants actually called me to remind/mildly scold me when she found out I did that.

This is something I hadn't thought of. It may be the case. Thank you.

  11. I think it's a bit odd that you would be waiting 4 months. I mean, I'd wait about 4 hours. I certainly would NEVER wait more than 4 days. Who waits 4 months? That doesn't make sense. It's like you're not even trying. It must not be a very important question you had. If you don't realize by now that you've been forgotten, I don't know what to tell you.

    WOW

    Your assumptions are wrong.

Not going to explain all the details.

  12. This.

The consultant gave you his/her number to contact them when you needed.

They could be calling you all the time to sell you something but then you would be here posting about how you are being hounded.

After you made your final payment, there is nothing left for them to do except to help you...... when you need help.

Sometimes they go on vacation or shift days off too and cannot answer, as well as you are not the only customer and they have lots of other emails and phone calls to return but, instead of waiting, you can easily call one of the other guest relation numbers.

If you read the rest of the comments, you would see there is an issue pending for 4 months.

  13. No, I think it is more that you didn't say anything in your OP about waiting on an answer to anything. You just put it out there that you hadn't heard from them. How was anyone to know you had outstanding questions? Just from what you posted in your OP, I think most people would be relieved to NOT get unsolicited calls from their PCC.

Maybe it is a communication issue with the PCC, like it has been in this thread?

Granted i didn't write all the details of the situation but i would think that no one would expect to socialize with a PCC after final payment. maybe its my bad for not stating that there was a specific cruise related reason that i was waiting to hear back from them - assumed it was obvious, but apparently wasn't.

not a communication issue here, within the emails is a long trail about the same subject (that goes back 4 months) that i am still waiting to hear about. and i clearly stated on all voice messages exactly what i need to talk to him about as well.

  14. i have not been on the gem yet but from what i can gather there are a few areas:

Deck 13, Bali Hai Bar & Grill

    Deck 6, Casino

    Deck 6, Corona Cigar Bar

Deck 7 aft, Bliss Area promenade deck

Deck 13 both sides of the bar

we are sailing next month, pm me after the 28th and i will let you know what i find out.

Sorry, i meant the 28th of April :D
