  1. So my balcony is a public area?

It really doesn't matter. It is going to come down to if people complain and my friend gets the smoking thing in current society and is not one to offend. She'd apologize and put it out if reasonably approached. We just dnt want to waste a perfectly nice morning in Miami with all that trying to get Vibe passes entails if she can't also fully enjoy her time there as well.

purpletequila, you are on our sailing... at least you signed up originally.

(Please check in on the spreadsheet if you can.)

Tell your friend she can come hang out with me and my DH in whatever designated areas there are! Oddly I only smoke when I am on vacation (probably due to the lovely libations) and because DH is a cigar smoker. Now HE's really treated like a 3rd class citizen!

TG there is the Humidor Cigar Lounge which lets every smoker in regardless. Maybe together we can all find the acceptable nooks and crannies where smokers can also enjoy their pleasures and vices. :D;)

  2. Last year we sailed on the Escape and loved it! This year we booked the Getaway (Nov 12th sailing). Question: where on board can I purchase a vibe pass and is it still first come first serve? (Last year we had this so fingers crossed we can get it again for our upcoming cruise).

Please pardon my interruption of this post on Vibe.

Hey scameron7! Since you are booked on the Getaway (Nov 12th sailing) why not join our roll call for the same sailing? http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2437015

Also, purpletequila-- are you still sailing with us? I don't see anything else for you on the spreadsheet.

Now back to your regularly scheduled post... thank you.!

  3. Sweet, we're going the end of January. Here's hoping it all works out!

    CouponMom,

So how did it all work out? Please share as we will be going there in November.

  6. It seems that you have to pay to play on the EPIC. I've already booked and am very excited. Hubby likes to eat, sightsee in port and we are both excited about the shows. He is frugal though. Neither of us gamble or drink. I like to sleep and read books. I am not interested in purchasing anything to clutter up my small house.

We would love to know what is free and cheap to do on the EPIC.

I have $125 OBC. Any recommendations on how to spend it?

    Candy

I agree with others here about going to the NCL threads for EPIC.

That being said, DH and I have been on the EPIC twice so far and even though we do spend time in the casino, and drink a little-- we had the most fun in "Howl at the Moon" (the late night piano bar) and "Fat Cats" (the jazz club) which are both free. If you like the atmosphere of an Irish pub, O'Sheehan's has the best fish and chips I have ever eaten, and their breakfast was good too. I believe O'Sheehans is open 24 hours. We saw Blue Man Group twice and the Legends in Concert was fun too!

For $125 OBC you could get a spa treatment, or two (if you wait for their specials,) otherwise I would recommend using it for one of the "specialty" restaurants which cost extra, but are worth trying IMHO. There are boards about that too.

Enjoy! It's a large ship, so there are plenty of places to sit and relax.

  7. Hey Tiggerman, am thoroughly enjoyng your review and photos - which are amazing! We're sailing the Jade in a little over 6 weeks, cruising the Adriatic, and so can't wait!

Looking forward to your next instalment of Santorini :)

I agree with others-- have been lurking and dislike breaking up the flow, but am totally enjoying Tiggerman's review so far! :D

DH have had our Sept. 2013 Jade cruise booked for three months now, and I was only recently able to book a hotel in Venice that far in advance. Wonderful reviews like this help greatly to plan for the rest of our cruise. Can't wait to read the rest of it. Thanks Tiggerman (David.)

  8. I am just back from my Mediterranean cruise and used RomeInLimo for private tours in Florence, Rome and Naples rather than the ship's organized tours. What a difference - I used the ship tours twice after those organized by RomeInLimo, and I am so glad I used RomeInLimo in Italy.

As far as our drivers, we had Fabrizio in Florence, Franco in Rome and Giovanni in Naples. Fabrizio was the best tour guide we had (our trip started pre-cruise in Barcelona where we had a private tour, as well as accompanied another group on a tour they had set up for Montserrat with another tour company and a private tour in Cannes). Fabrizio arranged for a private lunch at a wine shop, and he provided the pizza, sandwiches, and cheese so we could do some wine tasting. Great day in Florence.

Franco was good but his command of the English language was not as good as Fabrizio's. We thoroughly enjoyed our day in Rome with him though, and have no problem recommending him. While we were in Rome, we met Duman, the owner, who thanked us for booking with them and wanted to check to see what we thought of his drivers.

In Naples, Giovanni was great. He pulled over at a photo op location, and opened a bottle of homemade wine and poured us a bit so we could enjoy the wine and scenery. He sang to us as we were going over the narrow road to Positano.

On the tours organized by RomeInLimo, you get to see so much more. You get dropped off at the location you want to visit (you do a LOT of walking so the close drop off helps if you have bad knees), you get picked up at a close designated location, you get personal service instead of a tour guide holding up a number and then trying to follow them so you can hear the tour. Definitely follow RomeInLimo's suggestions for guides in Pompeii and the Vatican, or you won't know what you are looking at - too much to see in too short a time if you don't have a guide. The two guides they provided for Pompeii and the Vatican were very good. My sister has just recovered from a serious illness and they managed to get us through the sites at a pace she could follow. They kept her away from crowds as much as possible (almost impossible in the Vatican!) and let her rest when needed. I can't say enough good things about RomeInLimo or their guides.

    Margaret

We too just returned from our "EPIC" Mediterranean cruise and used RomeInLimo for private tours in Pisa/Florence, Rome and Naples. We were encouraged to book the three-pack in order to get a further discount. At first I was a little concerned booking tours with other people I had not met yet, but with Jany's quick and easy communication it was very reassuring that everything would work out well, and it did. Jany was always available via email for every question I had prior to our cruise.

What a great time we all had. We also used one of the ship tours after those organized by RomeInLimo, and we are now convinced to try tour shares from now on. There is no comparing the two. RomeinLimo is an excellent company to deal with if you are considering a tourshare. NO WORRIES! :D

As far as our drivers, we had Vinny in Pisa/Florence, Salvatore in Rome and Giovanni in Naples. All three were willing to work with us to accommodate lunch plans and actual tour sites.

Vinny was so knowledgeable about the area and was quite entertaining. We got the traditional visit to the Leaning Tower and the Miracle Square, but since we were not really the "museum" types, we nixed the Uffizi and he arranged a wonderful visit to a local winery/olive oil mfg. and we had a great wine tasting with locally made meats. It definitely was a great day in Florence for us.

Salvatore was good but did not seem as talkative as Vinny. We enjoyed our day in Rome with him, especially the gelato, and have no problem recommending him, but since we did not get the guide for the Vatican or the Basilica it was a bit overwhelming. It may have also been because it was the day of a papal address and the day before a major holiday, but it was just so VERY crowded!!! Of course, Salvatore managed to be the most excellent driver avoiding any collisions and maneuvering every tight squeeze. It was actually entertaining just to see him drive through the mess of traffic. He deserves an award just for his driving skills! The Trevi fountain was our highlight, but again-- I am convinced that the ship's shore excursions could not take us to all the places we went to that day.

In Naples, Giovanni was great. Like Margaret's tour, he pulled over at quite a few photo op locations, and opened a bottle of wine and poured us a bit so we could enjoy the wine and scenery. We had lunch at a wonderful litle out of the way restaurant in Positano (I think) where the owner waited on us and my husband had the best pasta dish of his life. (he says!)

We did order a guide for Pompeii (Tiziane?), and she was also fabulous! Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her subject. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone going to Pompeii to get one. There are just too many streets and avenues to manuever in a short period of time.

Giovanni has a wonderful personality and made this such an enjoyable trip, however one of the things that really struck us with Giovanni is that he went out of his way to get us to the places we really wanted to see, even though Jany told me it wasn't possible! Giovanni did just a quick pit stop through Sorrento so we could spend more time in Positano and also go to Ravello, which was one of our highlights on the beautiful Amalfi coast. He also indulged our groups' request to get some Napoli pizza before we left and he not only ordered it for us in advance, but allowed some of our group to go in the shop and take photos with the pizza makers. He even gave us a bottle of Limoncello to go. I don't know if this is protocol, or if he just had so much fun with us-- but we were a grateful group to have it for our later "reflections" of the day. ;)

Like Margaret said... "On the tours organized by RomeInLimo, you get to see so much more. You get dropped off at the location you want to visit, you get picked up at a close designated location, you get personal service instead of a tour guide holding up a number and then trying to follow them so you can hear the tour. If you are considering using RomeinLimo, have no fear-- just book them!!! The hardest part is picking the right tour and getting enough people to fill the group. Once you have that it's easy, and even if you don't Jany will work with you. I promise.

  9. afn10305 - I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but I just today came across your post to me. Unfortunately, we only have a few pics of ourselves and our dining partners. But my wife and I definitely remember you guys. We always go to all the shows when we cruise, both professional and passenger shows. So we were at the talent show you refer to. My wife even remembers crying! Every cruise is special, but the one that truly began your lives together must be extra-special. What a way to begin a Millenium!

    Best Wishes

    Bob and Terry

No worries. I'm convinced someone out there must have at least one picture. It will still always be one of my greatest memories.

We just got back on Thursday from surprising my best friend for her 40th birthday on the Carnival Inspiration and what fun it was to cruise with a group of friends! I love my husband, but it was a totally different experience to have other girlfriends along. We hope to plan more "friend" cruises in the future.

  10. Hi...I just read your post. My wife and I were also on that Millenium cruise on the Dolphin. It was fantastic seeing the the last sundown of the Millenium. I think that ship was originally built in 1957 or 58, and there were definite signs of age (especially the "swimming pool" area) but the food and the service definitely exceeded the other cruises i've been on with RCCL and Carnival. We just booked the Western Med. Venice cruise for Nov 13, 2008, on RCCL's Brilliance. I"ll be thrilled if the food and service is even close to what we experienced on the Dolphin

Jersey Cruisers this is specifically for you...

About a month and a half ago I made this request under the Dolphin IV topic without having seen your post! Bonnie J. was kind enough to reply and send us photocopies of some interesting things, but still not quite what we were hoping for. Maybe you can help us??? :o (PLEASE see original post below.)

"I thought I would put this out there for anyone else who might have been on the Dolphin IV Millenium cruise .

We just loved that old ship even with the hallway "dip."

My husband proposed to me on the Dolphin IV as part of the passenger talent show and it was actually on the evening of New Year's Day (Jan. 1, 2000) and he was the last participant after a singer and a dancer I think. I remember him literally sweating bullets at dinner beforehand and our waiter "Rashley" giving him lots and lots of water before he had to go to the rehearsal. His last line after his comedy routine was "oh yeah, there's one more thing... there is this girl in the audience I love very much, etc. etc." then he went down on his knee. From then on out we were known (at least by that audience) as the couple who got engaged on the ship. Not that there weren't others, just that he made it SO public! Of course I will never forget it.

We would take anything from that Millenium cruise because we seemed to have misplaced photos from that time and it was pre-digital photo. We definitely did NOT get any pictures from our proposal as it was a surprise to me, even though my husband had planned it with the crew-- he was so nervous to participate in the talent show, he was not thinking that far in advance. The night before was an incredible Millenium New Year's in Key West and I remember the formal night on the ship and then dressing down to go run around and take part of the fireworks off the pier and the revelry in the streets. I was a tad disappointed that so many other young ladies were getting proposed to that night, not knowing what was in my immediate future.

Mike and I were also in a 1950's dance contest and he dressed like a woman in some other "dress up" contest where he won champagne and T-shirts. To this day he still wears that "Millenium" shirt as if it was a trophy! We would be so grateful if anyone could give us a photographic memory of that night! (Oh yeah, and I was dressed as a space girl all in silver! It does seem the Dolphin IV staff enjoyed "dress-up" because there were dress-up themes that whole cruise.)

It was such a fun time and and throw back to the cruising of my youth... not like today's megaships. I think bigger is not always better. Dolphin IV may she R.I.P."

Jersey Cruisers??? How about it... would love to hear from you no matter what, since my husband is originally from Monmouth County!

  12. Our 1st cruise was also on the Dolphin IV when she was the only ship they had. The Dolphin was sold to a brand new company, Cape Canaveral Cruise Line. They did 2 day cruises with two 4 days a month. We had a fantastic Millenium cruise on her - 6 days- and went on her LAST 4 day in August, 2000. She had been bellowing soot for years and it was going to cost more than a million MORE than they thought to fix her. She probably went to India where they take apart old ships for the scrap. The Seabreeze and Oceanbreeze were sold to Premier which had the Big Red Boat. A bank repossed both ships in the MIDDLE of a cruise. Seasbreeze was in , I think, Nova Scotia, heard Captain announced in middle of night everyone HAD to get off the ship. Anyway, that November, the Seabreeze sank off our NC coast in like 3,000 feet of water- too deep to do anything. There were 35 crew members aboard, all resued by our coast guard. Saw on TV pulling crew up by the pool I had swum in the year before.

LOVED the Dolphin line and SMALL ships. BUT, NCL's Majsety, about 1200 passenger, was built by Dolphin as their Majesty line. It was sold to NCL and is still cruising. It goes to Caribean in winter from Charleston, SC and from Boston to Bermuda in summer. We hate NCL but loved the Majsety, her size, her crew and Captain!

I am new to these forums so don't know if this totally kosher, but since Bonnie's already replied to me (personally) I thought I would put this out there for anyone else who might have been on the Dolphin IV Millenium cruise .
