  1. We were also wondering about what DH should wear on formal nights when we go on Anthem in April. We’re gojng to carry off our luggage when we return, so we also don’t want to carry an extra piece of luggage. We found these thin suit bags at Dollar Tree, which my father used in February when he and my mother cruised, and he recommended them. We bought two. My husband will bring his nice sport jacket, and pack it in one of those. We will bring the extra on in case the first one rips. He’ll just bring two different shirts and ties, and wear a different pair of pants on the two formal nights but same jacket.

  2. i just logged into the Royal Caribbean website as usual. I clicked on Cruise Planner when I saw my cruise as usual with the countdown and everything. Then the website asked me for last name, reservation number, date of sailing and ship, something it hasn’t required me to enter before when trying to access the Cruise Planner. I entered all of the information and all I got was the RCCL Customer Service Page. I clicked LOGIN again and it started the exact same cycle.

Are there current problems with the website and Cruise Planner? I like to check a lot to see if prices have changed for things like the drink package and internet package, both of which we have purchased. That way if the price goes down I can cancel and repurchase.

At one point I was able to see the different categories that the Cruise Planner normally had, but then when I click on “Reserve”, it takes me back to the page requesting the sailing info again. So I can’t see the actual choices under the categories.

    Anyone else having these issues?

  3. Hopefully she hasn’t posted in a while because she’s having such a wonderful cruise that she just doesn’t have the time or desire to go on the internet. We always disconnect when we cruise and we just enjoy the vacation. The only exception is the one coming up in April because we want to video chat with our sons everyday since this is our first cruise without them. So we got the surf and stream for one device, but that’s all we are using it for.

Can’t wait to read about her opinion but hope she’s having a wonderful time!

  4. No, not all stomach viruses are caused by noro. Noro is a virus, so I'm not sure that it causes other viruses at all. Also, not all vomiting is the result of stomach viruses.

Thanks! I know there are numerous reasons that people might vomit, including drinking excessively, food poisoning, morning sickness, etc. I’m just wondering if I’ve had noro before or not. I’m 41 and I’ve had plenty of stomach viruses in my life including ones that I caught from my own children, just that I usually didn’t throw up from them. Even some of the ones I’ve caught from my children, they threw up but I didn’t.

Is it possible to have noro and not throw up from it and have all of the other symptoms?

  5. This is what scares me about cruises, even though I’ve been on many cruises. I have a phobia of vomiting (it’s called emetophobia). Are all stomach viruses caused by noro? I’ve had many stomach viruses over the years that didn’t make me actually throw up, but I had all the other symptoms of noro besides the vomiting. We’re those viruses likely noro? We’re going on Anthem in April. We’re teachers so it’s during our spring break which is Easter week. There will be tons of children onboard.

  6. Food wise, the WJ is fine.I just don't like the crowds or commotion at peak times. When I first started cruising, I'd wander around looking for a table while my food would get cold and/or soggy.

Now I just schedule accordingly. But STILL, often times the DW and I would take turns holding the table while the other would get food. I'd wish they would seat you at table like most land-based buffets.

EDIT: This is more of an issue at breakfast and lunch. The dinners in WJ have always been good and calm.

I feel exactly the same way about cruise ship buffets. I haven’t been on Royal Caribbean in many years (we are booked on Anthem in April), but it’s the same way on NCL and Carnival ships. We prefer the MDR on cruises because we feel like either our food gets cold while searching for a table or we don’t really get to eat together as much because of taking turns holding the table. When we go to Disney World or an all inclusive resort on land, they give us a table before we go to the buffet, and a waiter brings the drinks.

  7. Another New Yorker chiming in. Recently, my company announced they were moving our office and it was “only 15 miles away.” Those 15 miles equate to 1 additional hour each way in NY traffic.

The following day, I announced I would be resigning as the commute was just too much since I already spend 40 minutes each way to travel 7 miles.

Miraculously, I was offered a position in another locale that takes me 7 minutes.

    Life is good! :D

Wow, I’m glad that in the end it worked out better for you than before! Yes, 15 miles takes a long time here. I’m always amazed when we’re away in another state or upstate NY and it takes 15 minutes to travel 15 miles!

  8. That's mine too. District 75 teacher. :) I'm still VERY iffy on it. I'm a Disney Cruise Line girl and have been generally ok with RCCL's Radiance Class. I'm not sure about the huge ones - and I didn't have the best experience food-wise on Jewel this summer in Europe. I'm gluten-free and found the new menus pretty limiting and my head server less than knowledgable about things (like faro which he tried to insist was safe (it's not)) and it taking me complaining on the mid-cruise survey to make me feel like I could ask for what I wanted and they'd try to make it happen (whereas 2 year prior on the Brilliance my server (not even the head waiter) made it clear from the moment I was seated and he came over to greet me that if I didn't see anything on the menu we could come up with something.

That quick Lyft ride over to Jersey sure does make it tempting though.

I completely understand and can relate because of an experience with NCL and my son’s food allergies. We had cruised with them quite a few times and they were good with my son’s food allergies once he was diagnosed with them, but 3 years ago on the Breakaway, it wasn’t good. The first day the head waiter told me they couldn’t accommodate him at lunch (they had lunch on embarkation day in the MDR) because it was only the first day and very busy. Another day at a lunch buffet, a chef came out to speak to us about what was safe. He assured us that all the desserts were tree nut free. It turned out that one of the cakes had almond paste in it, and a different chef came running over to us to warn us. Thankfully my son wasn’t up to dessert yet but that was scary and could have ended terribly. I went to guest services and told them I didn’t want anything, but I wanted them to be aware this was going on so that another family wouldn’t have to go through worse. They advised me to email NCL when I returned home, so I did. I got a cold and callous response that almost seemed like an auto reply, stating that my email was forwarded to the proper department. I waited and waited and heard nothing from them. I emailed back and heard nothing.

I told this story about the Breakaway because my whole family thought that the crew couldn’t handle the crowd on that ship. It just felt like they overloaded the ship with lots of tiny cabins (smaller than usual on NCL), to cram in more people. It always felt extremely crowded no matter where we went. My parents were with us on that cruise, and they went on Anthem OTS this past February. They too were nervous to be on such a large ship again, but they said that this ship was designed much better and the crew was amazing. They said it never felt crowded no matter where they went, and they ate in the Windjammer during peak lunchtime quite a bit! They loved it so much that they’re returning in February on Anthem again. My husband and I are going on Anthem for spring break without the kids, who will stay with my parents for the week.

  9. Question... I know Silk and American Icon Grill are the two used for MTD. But do you select which one when you make your reservations through the planner? Or do you just go to the one you want at the time you made the reservation?

I'm pondering the Anthem over my Spring Break but am confused by how MTD works on a ship where there are 2 dining rooms used for it.

When is your spring break? My husband and I teach in NYC and our break is from Good Friday through the week immediately following Easter. We are going on the April 20, 2019 sailing on Anthem.

  10. We’re going on Anthem OTS in April, and have the deluxe drink package. I love mixed drinks, but I can’t have coconut which a lot of cocktails contain. It’s not an allergy, just that coconut doesn’t agree with me. I can have Malibu rum, just no actual coconut or coconut cream/milk.

What are your favorite cocktails on Royal without any coconut in them? Especially those that are unique to Royal.
