  1. Hi Linda -

DH and I took Amtrak out to Seattle for our Alaskan Cruise in 2013. We left Minneapolis at 11:30 at night and since we decided NOT to do a sleeper - we were assigned to upstairs seating. Because Minneapolis is one of the "further down the line" stops - seating for a family will be very difficult. Until we got to Grand Forks, ND, we were seated several rows apart.

The trip is interesting but can be arduous if your children are active. Would suggest getting a sleeper - much easier than sleeping setting up for two nights.

If you do decide to travel that way - please post here and I can give you a few tips that might make it easier for you.

    Barbara

I am hoping his desire for train travel will be satisfied with the two shorter trips! No - we wouldn't be able to take the train west this time - we have to make a stop in California on our way to Anchorage. But thank you for the information - that is the trip he has always talked about - I never thought it would be good when the kids were young and active, and now that they are older he can't afford to take the extra time off work to travel that way!

  2. That's our timeline as well. We're doing the train first with the dogcart ride too. I think the ship is usually on time for this port since (at least on our itinerary) it has 2 days at sea prior.

I spoke on the phone to Stacy from Chilkoot (I had a problem with the website when making my reservation). She said they never have a problem with meeting at 7:30 - the ships usually arrive at 5-6 AM and are ready to let people off at 7. It is only a few minutes from the ship to the meeting place.

  3. You might want to check what day your in port, the routes vary by day of week, you may not have a choice of which way to take train.

    J.

Yes, we are due in port at 7 AM - train first is 7:30 AM - I am hoping we won't have a problem with that...

Bus first leaves at 8:30 AM

  4. We are taking the train because, well, it's a train. Hubby is a total railroad man, so that's why we are.

Yes, I just asked my husband - he OKed the extra money - he has always talked about taking the train from MN out west.... I am sure there will be no comparison:D

  5. It is about $80 extra for the train and bus combo from Chilkoot vs. bus alone going to the same places.....$80 each for 4 people - is the train that much better than the bus? The views are really spectacular?

We are already taking the train from Anchorage to Seward....

I am really inclined to say yes....but it appears we are really blowing the budget for tours this cruise...

  6. I would sweat to death in ski pants if the temp was anything over about 40. I suppose people from hot climates might be more comfortable in them... but they are also less likely to own them in the first place.

    Exactly!

  7. Look at where people are from in judging their reply relative to your experience.

Coming from Minnesota I can tell you the "feel" of the weather is really relative to what you are used to. In the fall 50° feels cold - people are wearing long sleeves here - in the spring after we have had -50° windchills - 50° feels warm - people are wearing shorts!

So if you are coming from a warm climate and warm spring the same temperature will feel colder to you than to someone who just got through a cold winter.

  8. Allisons,

Just some extra info for you to make up your mind on your future booking. We had fabulous weather on our cruise last week. We got closer to Hubbard on this cruise than the Captain has made it in the 10 sailings before. He told me he had previously sailed in 10 times and out of that 4 he couldn't make it in. Sorry you must have been one of the four.

I love 9256 and LOVED Paulo as our steward. Sailing in May you have shorter days than August. The sun probably wasn't an issue in May. We were fortunate to have sunny days for most of this past cruise, thus being out on the balcony with shorter overhang than some other afts, made it really bright. If we had really hard rain the cover on 9256 would only help where the loungers sit. Not alot of overhang on the right side of the balcony. If you choose a middle aft on deck 10 or deck 9 you would have more overhang if it was raining and from the sun since those balconies are deeper.

We had some heavy fog come in so I was glad we went up to the helipad for some pictures. If I had waited for the ship to turn I would have missed some shots. Sailing away from Hubbard the fog slipped in so fast I wish I had taken a video. I was able to get some pictures later that we only because I had the aft cabin.

We only parked in the shade in Skagway. Our cruise was a Northern sailing from Vancouver to Seward. Hope this makes sense.....still on jet lag from being up over 26 hours.

We stayed two extra days in Seward. We saw tons of things by just doing things on our own.

So your situation is like ours - you had the port side corner aft on a northbound cruise - we are looking at the starboard side corner aft on a southbound cruise. Can you see anything to the side, or do you need to wait until it is pretty far past you?

  9. I believe you all have confirmed my idea.....we had a mid ship port side suite, and got the chance to move to the 2 bedroom suite 9656 on Radiance (2 adults and 2 teenage girls). In my mind this will make things much easier throughout the cruise -and the balcony is HUGE! But my husband is worried that because this is aft STARBOARD corner - we will be giving up a lot of our view. We won't be able to see anything on shore until we are far past it - adding a lot of distance to what we are looking at.

Are you really close enough to the shore that the distance will make a difference?
