  1. Thanks for this info. We leave on the Anthem this coming Sunday. We are coming up the turnpike from Philly. When we get to 14A, would you suggest taking 440 or Avenue E? Is there signage on 440 or Avenue E?

    440. There are definately signs. Coming from 14A, You turn LEFT JUST BEFORE the 34th street Light Rail station, which is the second station on the right side. There's a Left-Trun bay.

If you pass the Supermarket on the left (I think it's Stop and Shop), you went too far. Just find a U-turn and head back on 440 North. The pier will then be on your right.

I tried to put pictures from Google maps in, but it failed (Probably too big) sorry.

Don't worry, it sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

6am flights are more attractive at the time of booking. We're off to the Big Easy, and then boarding the Dawn on Sunday. This is a special trip for us - returning to the ship that introduced us to NCL back in 2010.

More to come. Posting live from the Dawn 11/27.

I LOVE that first line. Been there.

  3. We loved it. Quiet, big enough, had no problem ever finding our way because you just keep walking to the back on the left side of the ship.... The balcony is big enough for the 2 recliners and a table, probably could fit 1 more chair. Our room was always clean, the only problem was a hair in 2 different glasses. Asked the Stewardess (What was her name, hmmm.) to change all the glasses in the room and she did it right away.

I just switched from deck 12 to 11910...I really wanted the bed near the balcony... From your pictures It looks like that's the case... How was the room??? I sail in January and am dying to know!
  4. That would seem very inefficient to me, always looking for a ship phone to find out if someone wants to just catch a show or go to bingo or have a drink.

I also read a thread where the ship board WiFi was not functioning very well and messages sent did not get delivered in a timely fashion.

Guess we will just have to 'wing' it and create meeting points.

    Yup, very

    inefficient.

I just read recently about leaving voicemail and you can check it on any ship phone. FaceTime won't work (or everyone would use it to avoid paying.)

  5. I've installed iconcierge on our iphones. I wondered if we can use our Facetime for communication on board while at sea without paying for the additional wi-fi package?

Any other ways to communicate with my family on board?

  6. on here. Just go up to the "Search Cruise Critic" box (The one with the magnigfying glass next to it at top of the page and type 10290 breakaway

then click on the magnifying glass. A lot of stuff comes up - like 3 pages worth.

Hi just got my cabin number 10290,breakaway any feed back on this, when you look at the deck plan it looks bigger does anyone know why,any pics would be good thanks
  7. That has to be local response time (Between your pc and the on-ship router. PS - don't try it too much or you'll have to buy another data package.

A big chunk of what they are calling a speed upgrade is actually what's called data compression. Instead of sending 20 space characters, they send a special code, then the number of times the character is repeated, then the actual character that's repeated. i.e. - instead of sending 20 space characters, they send 3 characters. (In laymens terms) Space IS the most repeated character, I think. They probably do it at the bit level.

They probably added transponders, too. Add another transponder and it's like having two connections. Big dollars, though. It isn't cheap to hurtle an object the size of a sattelite into geosynchronous orbit and maintain it.

I remember (Dating myself here, lol) Telex networks used 50 baud 5 bit Baudot. Unicase Letters and numbers that you had to switch between with a keystroke (Figs key). With a satellite link, we had to disable the timers or the software would think the links had timed out. That was in the 70's. Now, 7 bit ascii, and Terrabit cables it doesn't happen.

  8. Understood, in-laws & mom in frail health with health issues - we managed to travel over the years, delegated the proxies but still had contingencies. Just piggyback on Loonbeam - for basic daily email or checking SMS over WiFi, you shouldn't worry as hopefully, in a year's time, the "systems" would get better as a whole.

Use your iPad or tablet, iPhone or Android/Nexus smartphone with a mobile browser like Chrome or alike, that cache & compress data - turnoff background refresh/downloads & alike, AdBlocker to limit data - and disable iCloud & Dropbox links etc. Compose off-line, upload, retrieve & read off-line and turnoff attachments.

A dual-band WiFi device that can surf on the less congested 5 GHz band would also be a plus for that extra advantage.

Well, it's unconfirmed to be on the Escape, at least - currently - so maybe it will gradually rollout, compression & caching has been around for years. If RCI, CCL and X can do it, I find it difficult to believe that NCL are leaving themselves behind ... well, maybe for budgetary reasons.

Back in May and on the Breakaway, I had no issues with ship's WiFi free inTRAnet and paid inTERnet, on Nexus 6X, iPad Mini or Sony Viao notebook ... aside from tweaking them to optimize in anticipation of a slower connection, upload speed peaking around 17 Mbps with 20 ms latency; and it was clearly not SpeedNet & still with MTN.

Hmmm, how can you get 20msec latency when it takes 500 msec to get to satellite and another 500sec back down? (Speed of light)

Have to think about that one.

  9. I take a lot of meds because of my heart transplant. I always keep them in individual daily holders. All I need plus an extra week. (You never know)

I've never had a problem on a cruise or plane. Definitely in my carry on. I put a printout of my spreadsheet in the baggie with them, and always keep a card with the list in my wallet.

If I had to keep them in original bottles, I'd have to have an extra carry on bag.

  10. Apparently not always. On my March Navigator cruise a woman brought her "maybe" 13 or 14 year old son/grandson/nephew? in the casino each night and he always played a machine next to her without being bothered while I was there.

Maybe Grandma was gambling a lot of money? If they make him leave, she does too. And the casino loses for once. ;-)

  11. @Cruise Girl Forever:

You asked a lot of questions here that entail a few variables like time and day...

A lot of the stuff you can find here:

    http://www.njtransit.com/hp/hp_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=HomePageTo

Including the light rail/train/bus map/sched, etc.

    Amtrak is here:

    http://www.amtrak.com/home

And, probably the most useful is google (our friend)

    https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Newark+Penn+Station&daddr=E+34th+Street+HBLR+Station,+Bayonne,+NJ&hl=en&sll=40.672184,-74.106581&sspn=0.003084,0.006968&geocode=FfKPbQId8lWU-ynTx6t2hFPCiTG6OvSTWB8lQw%3BFSKabAIdmzWV-ymZ0CuM7FHCiTGgEVCtxp5SyQ&oq=E+34th+Street+HBLR+Station&t=h&dirflg=r&ttype=now&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=def&mra=ls&z=13&start=0

(Cut and paste if the link doesn't work or just check the route on maps.google.com and use the bus icon to find the "E 34th Street HBLR Station, Bayonne, NJ" from Newark Penn Station. It's about 45 mins total, but that's on a Tuesday, not Saturday.)

It's a very short walk (Once you get up the mile long elevators from the PATH train) to the light rail. There's a hyatt-regency right there which is nice, but probably pricey. If you spend the night, you can take the PATH right into downtown. I don't know, but maybe they even have a shuttle to take you to the cruise port, but YMMV. At that price, they should, but hey, it's New York! (Sort of)

And, at the end, you'll have to arrange a cab pickup from the light rail to the pier.

Having said all that, my advice would be to get to the hyatt, and cab or shuttle it.

  12. The Beaner:

I didn't know that was the day of the 5boro bike tour. I haven't done the tour in decades but I remember seeing the Belt backed up a long way. The BQE was closed from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Belt exit. If I was coming from Long Island, I'd check out the Midtown Tunnel, West Side Highway and the Holland Tunnel. Take the Turnpike to Exit 14 and get onto 440 South (Towards Staten Island).

Of course, the tour may have gotten smaller, they may have gotten traffic to flow better, or you might just get lucky.

We're on the same cruise, but our commute will probably be made easier by the tour since we live on Staten Island, Sorry ;-)
