  1. In Rick Steeves' "Mediterranean Cruise Ports" he states that at the dock in Livorno, "enterprising drivers with eight-seat minibuses gather groups to split their 400 euro fee (50 euro per person)...you'll be driven one hour into Florence, dropped off near the center for four or five hours of free time, then taken back to the port."

Am I interpreting that right, are there 8 person minibuses that you can just hop in "on the spot" without advance reservations? If so, are they plentiful, and do we have a good chance of getting a ride this way on a Sunday morning?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has been to Livorno lately and can confirm the price and existence of these minibuses! Our roll call can't gather 8 people to share a reserved van, and train times aren't the best for our day. Cruise line transportation to Florence makes 50 euro per person sound like a bargain!

  2. A few years ago when we were on the ship with our adult son and daughter, they were in 101. Although we didn't stay in the suite we were in it quite a bit so I can answer some questions.

101 is much larger than the standard cabins. (Our suite 201 was directly above.) The bed(s) are in the squared off section (at the top of the deck plan). This leaves a much larger than usual "living area" in the suite. There are two smaller closets near the entrance (rather than the one large walk-in closet as in the other suites). There's also a small area just outside the closets that can be closed off from the rest of the room so that it can double as a dressing room. My daughter appreciated this feature since she was sharing the cabin with her brother.

The only "off" thing I can remember about the room is the placement of the table in front of the sofa. We can't remember the exact issue, only that the table could not be moved and it wasn't quite right. The suite's window was small and the room was dark compared to our suite 201, but this may be true of all suites on deck 4--I don't know, 101 was the only suite on deck 4 that I was ever inside.

I should add that being that far forward on the ship, you have some noise whenever the anchor is raised or lowered. We didn't find it bothersome, but some others complained about it.

The laundry is just across the hall, so it is very convenient for stepping in to iron an item or checking on clothes in the dryer. I did a lot of hanging out in 101 while doing our laundry!

  3. I too am extremely disappointed to hear that the MDR is closed at lunch. I thought I had read on this board that Seabourn's policy is to have the MDR open for lunch on cruises longer than 7 days. That is one of the reasons we booked a longer cruise. Does anyone know the current policy?

  4. First and last nights, and any casual night, a collared shirt or roll-neck/polo neck sweater and long trousers, no blue jeans.

Women, no shorts or blue jeans. I confess to getting away with black denim jeans occasionally. I suppose one might add no bare midriffs - though I don't think this bit of advice should be necessary.

I was wondering about the acceptability black jeans for first night. Would a nice pair be ok with cute top and shoes? (Covered midriff, of course.)

  5. When are you sailing? We're on that same itinerary in September.

The only port I've been to on your list is Portovenere. When we were there in 2010, it was just a short walk from where the tender landed to the ferry, which we caught for a very scenic ride to the Cinque Tierre. We rode to the furthest village and then made our way back, taking the ferry to most, but walking between two of the closest villages. You could also take a train between the villages, but the ferry was very simple for us to do on our own.

Although we didn't visit Portovenere at all, as I recall the town was just past the dock and looked worth a visit.
