Cruise Behavior - declining ?

Recommended Posts

We sailed on Miracle back when she was new and sailing out of Baltimore, but haven't sailed on a Carnival ship since. I enjoyed that cruise probably more than any I have been on since, in spite of paying for fancy suites and all kinds of upgrades - Miracle was the best, and the passengers who sailed with us were really nice people, quiet and well behaved.

In the years that have passed all I ever seem to hear about is bad behavior on Carnival ships (low prices maybe ?) and YouTube seems to be littered with nasty Carnival fight videos.

So is this all being exaggerated, or have any regular cruisers noticed a change over recent years?

We've been on 6 Royal and 9 Carnival ships starting from the Mardi Gras and I haven't noticed a change in at least the past decade.

Some claim variables like time of year, length of cruise, and departure port, but I don't think a formula exists. We've seen people led off in handcuffs on the Freedom of the Seas and the Ecstasy. I'm sure there were more, I didn't see.

I've seen teenagers and their family escorted off the Rhapsody of the Seas as soon as we docked in Jamaica. Fuel to the fire is they were still shouting at ship security.

Long answer, but I think when you have mass-market pricing and lots of alcohol a small element will not behave.

nope they seem to be the same

now the longer voyages seem to be more quiet then the 3 and 4 day cruises as certain times of year, spring break can be a pain in the arse I am told.... but I still find the best out of all of them :)...

I think there is a big difference in 3-day booze cruises out of florida and LA and 7 day cruises out of everywhere else.

The worst cruise I have been on was a 4 day weekend cruise out of Miami on Carnival, and one of the best was a 7 day Mexican Riviera of all things on Carnival.

(Note "worst cruise" is a relative term, as I will be on the same itinerary in 2 weeks, so "worst" ain't half bad when it comes to cruising!)

I think things have gotten worse because parents expect the 'cruise ship' to babysit their kids vs. them doing it themselves. I have noticed kids behaving very poorly on the last 3 cruises we have taken. Kids run the hallways. Kids and adults talk very loudly in the hallways late in the evening. Kids are in the jaccuzi when then are not supposed to be. The Serenity Deck is not as relaxing as it used to be. I think mostly it is a parenting issue however Carnival doesn't want to do anything about it.

I'm not sure how the prominence of video devices and our insatiable appetite for obnoxious YouTube videos (and other media) translates into any kind of real world facts.

People have relished being shocked and disgusted since the dawn of civilization -- whether it's public beheadings, forcing slaves to fight in arenas, or gaffawing at drunken nimrods acting stupid on YouTube.

If you're looking for facts, read "Culture of Fear" and look at all the stupid things people believe despite our living in what may be the safest, least dangerous time in human history.

Another lucky one here......:p

We haven't had any major issues.......except those unsuspecting kids in Waterworks blasting us with water when we walk by:mad::mad::D

I agree with the above poster....It seems like SOME people with kids, expect to walk on a cruise ship, and just let their kids "GO"...

That annoys me beyond BELIEF. Just because you are cruising you are STILL their parents. CONTROL THEM.

I hate reading posts where kids were running rampant all over the ship, taking peoples room service tags off the doors, screaming at late hours, etc.

I have no problems getting in their little, cute, faces, and telling them where to go:rolleyes:

Watch your kids.

I think it definitely depends on the time of year, length of cruise, and even ship. We've been on 4 cruises with Carnival and have never seen a fight or anything super crazy. We're not out late at night though and we're not hanging out in the "party" areas - that's just not for us. The Canadian cruise we took in early June was definitely not wild and crazy, just cold and foggy.

Any time there are large amounts of alcohol involved, there are people who are going to behave stupidly. They fall overboard, wake up in places they shouldn't be, and start fights for whatever reason. Cruises that are more of a party atmosphere are going to have more of that happen.

Next cruise: Carnival Breeze June 2014

I agree with the 3 or 4 day cruises out of Miami - personally, I have never been on one of those but the cabin stewards/dining room staff had mentioned to us once that they felt those are the "worst". Even they don't like them! I did go on a 3 day out of Port Canavaral - there were a lot of partiers on that one too - but it wasn't bad for us - gave us a lot of people watching times.

Our first cruise was 22 years ago on the Jubilee, 7 night Mexican riviera. There were drunk teens throwing up during the nightly shows. Unruly passengers. I don't think times have changed all that much, just larger ships which means more people to contend with.

We were on the Dream a few weeks ago for Spring Break and did not encounter anything other than the normal chair hogs ;) Some of the girls in our group were a little disappointed that the nightclub and parties were so tame.

I also did not see a huge issue with the kids, or young adults either. Maybe it was due to the 7 day cruise being more relaxed. I highly doubt i would do a 3 or 4 day unless it was Disney though.

I think behavior by people in general has continuously gotten worse in all aspects of life and therefore expect no difference on a cruise ship.

I've only been on one cruise so far so I don't have much to compare it to, but I will say it cured me of ever wanting to cruise when school is out.

Not because the 15 million kids on board were necessarily badly behaved, they were just EVERYWHERE. Being kids, sure. There was no escape!

Not my ideal vacation.

We just did a spring break cruise (Valor out of San Juan). I thought the passengers were just so nice (really great bunch and big diversity of people). This seemed to me to be the nicest group of people we've ever sailed with. // Singles young and middle aged, couples, families (not that many considering it was spring break). Actually for spring break there were very few high school and college age kids. Everyone it seemed though was super friendly and enjoyed talking to my parents, my husband and I, my brother and his girlfriend and my 18 year old (He's such a great kid and I loved it that so many older people took the time to talk to him and enjoy his company when he was at shows, on tours, in the hot tub, especially given that there weren't that many younger people around). Maybe I have rose colored glasses, but it just seemed like a totally delightful group. It was fun seeing my 18 year old talk about scuba diving with 40 year olds. It was fun seeing a 28 year old girl letting my 76 year old mom use her battery charger as my mom forgot hers and they had the same camera. I was fun running into people time and time again on the ship that we did the same off ship excursions with and even having them join us at our table for the comedy shows. I had lots of great casual conversations with people in the elevators too.

this I somewhat subjective though. what do you consider poorly? some of this stuff is just kids being kids. my example was a night on the sensation. my wife was in the casino for a bit and I was sitting out on the promenade with my two boys. the magician was doing magic tricks for them. we were sitting close to the glass elevators. There were four kids in the 10-13 age group sitting on the floor in one of the elevators. riding it up and down. just appeared to be sitting and talking as the elevator went up and down. if anyone got on they moved their feet so the others could ride. one couple got in on the deck we were sitting on and got mad. the lady yelled don't you kids have something better to do at them. one of the kids replied that they didn't and that they were waiting for mom & dad to be done in the casino. they were not being rude or disrespectful to anyone that I could see but they caught hell from the one lady because they shouldn't have been sitting in the elevator. this lady probably told everyone she knew that these kids were misbehaving and to me they were not. they were just four kids hanging out on the elevator having a fun time. I have seen the kids in the hot tubs. I have seen kids running up and down the halls, I have seen the kids ride the glass elevators up and down over and over. I wouldn't say any of these kids were being naughty, rude, or disrespectful to anyone. They were just kids being kids.

Couldn't agree more. Just let them have fun. They weren't hurting anyone. Your only a kid once, so let's not make them grow up too fast. They'll have plenty of time in their lives to be a "mature adult"
