Stockholm Pass

We will be in Stockholm this summer and are thinking of getting the Stockholm Pass, which includes access to the Hop On Hop Off Buses & Boats and also entry into some popular attractions such as the Vasa museum.

Does anyone have experience with the pass on their cruise? I guess I am curious if

  1. Is it worth the money?
  2. How easy it is to get to the first boat/bus from the cruise terminal (Stadsgården)?
  3. How easy is it to get back to the ship at the end of the day?

Thanks!

We visited a lot of expensive museums in Stockholm, so the earlier itineration of this pass saved us a lot of money (that pass, which is no longer offered, included public transportation for 24 hours). If you are docking at Standgarten, it is a very short walk that was painted red right that will lead you straight to the HOHO boats, which should be running directly to Vasa until 10 am. However, I'd recommend that you email the company close to sailing to confirm they are still running the early morning shuttle directly to Vasa, as there have been times in the past when they cancel this shuttle and start their boats later. Someone on this board recently emailed them and they confirmed they are planning on doing this for the 2018 season, but since early morning service has disappeared and restarted in previous seasons it's probably worth an email close to your sail date.

Honestly, if the pass is worth it depends on how many museums you were planning on attending. We visited Vasa, a Viking experience for kids at the History museum, the open air lemur exhibit at Skansen, and the Royal Armory so with those four entrances the pass was worth it. You'll need to price compare to see if it is worth it for you, since the passes also tend to be a bit expensive.

Please note that the TI booth directly next to the cruise ships is insanely busy when everyone disembarks. We were lucky to find an empty window at the side of the TI booth and buy our 24 hour card there, but if we hadn't seen he empty window we would have been stuck in line for a really long time so try to see if you can buy it ahead of time or find out where else you can get it. Also, please note that Vasa limits the number of people who are allowed in their museum at one time to protect the ship so there can be lines outside waiting to get in if you get there at the wrong time. We got there right when they opened, and it was empty and quite nice to walk around, and was crowded by the time we finished. So I'd try to leave the boat as quickly as possible in Stockholm and get there as fast as you can.

When we traveled four years ago, they had one ride tickets on the HOHO boats (which have since been discontinued). We did not have any trouble taking the boat to Vasa from the pier. We also stumbled on one of the HOHO boat stops right outside the Royal Palace when we finished our visit to Galma Stan. We didn't wait long, and were able to get right on a boat that took us straight back to the pier. However, during the day we used public transportation very easily to get between the four museums we visited (we just stopped at the Help desk and asked for directions to the next museum we were visiting and they helped us). The boat ride was quite nice, but others have posted on this forum that it might be possible to take public transportation boats for less and will have the same amazing view. A 24 hour public transport travel card costs

SEK 125 (adult fare); SEK 85 (discounted fare) so that might be an option if you aren't visiting enough museums to purchase the Stockholm Pass.

I generally don't find those comprehensive city passes worth the money nor do I want to spend hours upon hours in museums in a given day.

There's quite a lot to see outdoors in Stockholm, particularly if the weather is good. The hop-on bus and/or boat options are probably the best way to go.
