Best area in Rome to stay

Hello,

We will be in Rome for 3 days before leaving on a cruise. We are thinking about staying at a Airbnb and would like to know the best area to stay to be near most attractions. I someone could give streets to be near that would be great. I can zoom in when searching to pinpoint the best places.

The most central area is roughly bound by Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and Campo de Fiori. From this area you can walk to pretty much everything. The two furthest points would be the Vatican museums and the Colosseum, each about a mile and a half away.

We stayed at an Air bnb just north of the Piazza Navona. Very convenient to everything in central Rome. The only thing to remember is to insure your reservation in case you should need to cancel. I love airbnb!

No help from us on Air B and B (sore point for many of us SF Bay Area residents due to greedy property owners et al.)

Though it often books up almost a year in advance, check into the Garibaldi Suites- walking substance to the Spanish Steps. It's a hybrid boutique hotel/BandB, with good restaurant below and terrific reviews.

There are some good hotels in the Termini area, have a look at the hotels on Via Cavour and in the area of Piazza della Repubblica. From here it's a twenty minute walk to the Colosseum & Forum and you pass one of the hidden gems of Rome, the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore. Metro station outside Termini was very handy for getting around, especially to the Vatican.

How about staying in a convent? Always do that when in Rome it just feels "right"

Get a Rick Steves book on Rome. Lots of good recommendations there. In general, we like to stay a couple of blocks from a metro station. Once on the metro, you can go anywhere.

Except that the metro in Rome isn't very useful for tourists. When they eventually finish the new line that will change but right now it's really only useful for getting from the outside in, or for getting over to the Vatican museums, and then only if you are starting from a point near a metro stop.

I love staying in the Trevi area. Easy to walk to many sites and I love getting up early to eat breakfast by the Trevi fountain before any crowds appear.
