Going solo

Recommended Posts

Morning all. In august of this year I will be cruising solo for the first time. The point of this cruise is for self therapy/relaxation. This will be my third cruise. I will be on the dawn to bermuda. I fell in love with bermuda and cruising the first time i went, anyway, I would love to here from past or even future solo cruisers. Im really looking forward to this trip, but have to admit im a little nervous. I am a very shy but friendly person and have issue's with anxiety! My biggest fear for this cruise is dinning alone for 7 days. Thanks ahead of time for your replies

Good morning, there is a forum for those of us who're travelling solo. You'll find many answers to your questions and assurances for nervousness as well. I've done 2 solo cruises and am quite comfortable doing them now though did have your same fears.

Pop over to this website if you want to read and join in on conversations that might interest you.

Have you joined your roll call? There may be other solo travelers there who you could dine with.

I went on a solo cruise on the Epic about 5 years ago. They had a gathering for solo cruisers every night to dine together. It was a great way to meet new people

There are solo cruisers that meet up together at a certain time that listed on the freestyle newsletter with the host. At the meeting, you can hear what other solo cruisers are doing. Then you can decide for yourself if you would want to join other cruisers for dinner. The host can reserve a big table at MDR for all solo cruisers.

Even if you choose not to join in with the solo group, no-one bats an eyelid about someone eating alone. It was my biggest fear when I started sailing solo, but 8 cruises later and I've never had an issue or felt conspicuous. The waiters often given you an extra starter or desert as well and can make some extra time to chat - but without making it feel forced. It is best if you take a book or kindle to read in between courses.

And a fair few times you meet people on the excursions and end up joining them for dinner too. It all happens quite naturally.

I am so mad I didn’t read this when I wanted to cruise solo. But it was more about paying double then eating alone. Now I see there are single rooms though but hard to find. I just came upon one just messing around. Any one know if any line actually publishes them instead of hiding them? Let’s make most lines have a few on each floor.

I’ve never gone solo but I do usually spend a bit of time doing my own thing (because 7 days in close quarters can wear on even the best roommates) and no one ever cared or noticed when I was solo at a table. I’m a bit shy and reserved so it can be something that causes me worry.

Anyway my suggestion is to mix it up. One day, eat at the bar at Osheehans, next day eat outside by the aft buffet. Then try out a specialty. It doesn’t always have to be the main dining room. And even then as others have mentioned, there’s options there too as far as seating arrangements.

You have options and can see what works for you to be comfortable.

Have a great time!

I travel solo. On my last Gem cruise a cruiser staffer manned the 5:30 nightly get together

& those who wished to dine together were then escorted to the dining room. He changed

the dining venue each evening

look for the time on your daily paper delivered to the cabin.

To the OP...I can relate to all you said. BUT..do not worry !!! I have sailed solo twice and doing so again in October. I was really nervous the first time..but then and the time after found it to be a great experience. I actually loved the opportunity to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted.;) I use my solo cruises to "run away from home" . :D

As others have said..you can join in or not. Have fun doing your thing!
