Bodrum, Turkey - New Port???

Recommended Posts

Has anyone docked in Bodrum, Turkey lately?? If so, did you dock at the "new port"?? How far was it from the main part of town and to the castle area? Thanks for your help.

We were on Bodrum two days ago - temperatures in the high 30's and it's an absolute gem of a place!!! We docked at the new port and it's a lovely walk of about half an hour (leisurely pace and all on the level) to the Castle which stands on a promontary dividing the sweep of the bay from the port and the Marina.

However, there is a free shuttle boat (provided by the town/port authority?) which leaves from a berth adjacent to the ship's dock and takes you round the castle to the Marina. Excellent provision!

We walked into town and shuttled back. As you walk towards the Castle (which is not on very raised ground - so not much height to gain) you pass through an area of shops - there are also lots of cafes around too.

We walked up to the Mausoleum then on to the Amphitheatre which is quite impressive with fabulous views over the bay. It is quite a steep climb to get there but not too far and worth the effort.

Hopefully we shall be back next year when we intend to go to the well-reviewed Castle Museum.

Bodrum has a great atmosphere, is a beautiful, clean place and we loved it. I'm sure you won't be disappointed - everyone we spoke to on our cruise said how much they liked Bodrum. Enjoy!

We were in Bodrum in June 2006 when it was tendering that was used. To back up the above comments, Bodrum is super nice, very historic and interesting, etc. We loved this visit!!! The castle is part museum, part gardens, etc. Don't miss seeing that location. Below are some visual samples of this enjoyable town along the Turkish Coast.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

We walked off our ship and onto the shuttle ferry for a great ride across the harbour. The castle has an amazing underwater archaeology museum. Then we went into town for lunch in an outdoor pizza place. The local people are very friendly. They noticed my husband watching them play backgammon and gestured for him to join them. He did not as he had forgotten how to play.

Later we walked to the mausoleum and up to the ancient theatre and back down and along the waterfront to our ship. It was a magical day.

We really appreciate the great feedback from both of you:):). The shuttle is good to know about if we're running out-of-time.

We enjoy ports we can stroll through on our own and at our own pace...it's a fun way of getting the "feel" of a new and different place in this world.

The pictures are postcard perfect...thanks for including them:).

THANKS for the nice comments on the pictures!

Maryann made an excellent point on "The castle has an amazing underwater archaeology museum." Agree!! There's so much, so nice at this castle.

Read this thread with interest. Hope to get to Bodrum and lots of other areas in Turkey someday.

We found our two stops (Istanbul and Kusadasi) in Turkey to be absolutely wonderful. Friendly people, spotlessly clean, good food, lots to see and do, fun shopping and one of our favorite countries to visit. Plan to get back someday soon.

Marmaris is another super destination in Turkey (we loved both Bodrum and Marmaris equally) should you come across it on any itinerary you are considering. Enjoy your planning and return to Turkey.

We were in five ports in Turkey last year. They were all wonderful: Istanbul (history, setting, atmosphere, shopping, etc.), Kusadasi/Ephesus (history), Bodrum (see post above), Fethiye (even prettier than Bodrum, plus some interesting historical sites), Antalya (a large resort city on the Mediterranean with more wonderful historical sites).

In Bodrum and Fethiye it would have been easy to hire a gulet (boat) for the day - way less expensive than through the ship I would think.
