Iconcierge App on NCL Gem

We were on the Gem last month and used the iConcierge app with no problems. The only issue I noticed was that the notification wasn't loud, but that may be because I didn't have it set up right. It was very easy to use. It needs to be set up first though because they assign you a different number for your phone (it's not your regular phone number).

Thank you for your reply.

Is there a cost to use the App?

Yes. It was $9.99 I think.

Is the cost per phone or per cabin?

It's per phone. Just for the app though; once you pay the initial fee, there is no charge for texts to another phone with the app.

Can you load the App while on board or do you need to load it to your phone prior to boarding.

You can download the app at any time but it only works when you are in close enough proximity to the ship. Once you're close enough, when you open it, it will ask you if you want to activate it. If you do, it just charges your room for the initial fee.

Thanks.

Highly recommend prospective users pre-download the free App before cruising NCL onto her/his device - it's offered now for iOS, Android & Windows OS. Cruise terminas often have inadequate or slow/poor signal coverage for a fast download and you do not want to do this on a slow satellite link. It will take you a while to FTP the file for $$$ satellite if you are at sea & out of range of land towers.

The Apps has free features for accessing one's onboard stateroom account and to make speciality dining reservations, etc. The paid features are optional, for texting other registered users on the ship, or calling VoIP - for a one time fee, it's typically $9.99 per device (prices subject to change w/o notices) while connected to ship's WiFi inTRAnet, with no further charges. To access broadband inTERnet - data is metered by minutes used or MB data consumed, depending on the ship.

The same APP is used across the fleet, assuming the WiFi network is strong & robust - without degrading the functions on the App - recent cruisers returning from the GEM generally have positive comments & feedback in that it worked fine. High latency and slow/poor connection do not necessary reflect upon a well-written software application ... although, IMO, the App itself is outdated & has NOT been updated for well over a year (13+ months).

By all means, if folks wanted to stay in touch & do not want to use the free stateroom telephone system & free voice mail, go ahead & activate and sign for the optional features on this App. See the internet cafe manager on duty for help if necessary and if it doesn't work, request a refund and/or OBC to offset the costs paid ... which they seemed to be doing.

Each registered App user is assigned an unique 8 digits mobile number with a +1 prefix, associated with the stateroom.
