Need TRAIN info from Villefranche to Monaco

If anyone has ever taken the train from Villefranche to Monaco / Monte Carlo could you please help me with some questions.

What is the # or name of the train? Do you have a Schedule still or remember how often it ran? Someone posted a website for the train but it was entirely in French, I couldn't understand anything. Are there schedules in English when you get to the train station? Is it easy to find the train to Monte carlo? Do they run every hour or more frequently? I have heard it is fairly easy but after seeing the website in only french I am very hesitant to try this on my own. Can anyone who has taken the train be more specfic? Thanks!

When you exit the tender, walk along the promenade to your right and you will come to the train station, it's about 5 minutes. Go up the steps and to the ticket office. They speak english here. Get a return to Monaco Ville. When you have your ticket validate it in the yellow machine on the wall just outside the ticket office, don't forget to validate it as if you are stopped whilst travelling without, you get a spot fine.

Wait on the same platform that the ticket office is and the train comes out of the tunnel to your right. The other platform is for Nice.

Don't bother about the schedule, the trains run fairly often and you will have to wait with all the others, it is always quite busy. The train will stop at Monaco, it's easy to spot when you are there as the station is underground.

Ask at the office for return times before you leave the station.

There are two exits from the station, one Down the escalator that takes you out to the waterfront and one UP from the platform that will take you up to the Casino level (turn right when leaving the station and walk down the street to the Casino)

Here's a schedule that someone posted a while ago (sorry, I can't give credit to the poster who first posted it as I only saved the schedule). It's also in French, but below I've shown some translations. This schedule goes through to December 12/09.

Translations (these apply to the top of the chart, above the train times):

tous les jours: every day

sauf: except

sam: short for Samedi (Saturday)

dim: short for Dimanche (Sunday)

fériés: holidays

I don't think so ... suggest getting a guidebook such as Rick Steves Provence and the French Riviera and either taking it with you, or photocopying the relevant pages. You'll also find basic French-English translations in the book. (I was able to borrow RS's book from my library).

Is it easy to find the train to Monte carlo?

Very easy ... you'll be at Port de la Sante ... walk along the street/beach to where the SNCF sign is (about 10 minutes) ... there are stairs from the beach up to the station.

In this map, SNCF is in the top middle.... http://www.villefranche-sur-mer.fr/pages/plan/planville.html

Scroll down on this site to the photo with the caption "The Villefranche Train Station (Right Above the Beach)". The stairs from the beach to the station are built into the stone wall.

Just to clarify something in my post above ... the train schedules aren't in the Rick Steves guidebook that I mentioned ... but there is good info about this area in his book, including transportation options, and translations in the back of the book.

We got to the station at about 9.50 and there were signs saying the train that had been due just before that was delayed, so we were quite pleased we didn't have to wait for long. Unfortunately, that train never turned up and we ended up waiting for about an hour in the blazing sun, so just a warning that even if you have the timetables you still may not get the train you want.:(

Susan,

Thank you for all your advice! I noticed in the Villefranche map that there is a red train symbol by the waterfront in an area called Place Wilson, Do you know if that is a smaller train stop? It sounds like the one Andym might be talking about.

Andym

Thank you for such detail it is just what I needed ! Do you recall how much a ticket was ? I hear it is inexpensive. I think I will be able to do this on my own now with all the info instead of going on a tour. I plan on catching the bus to Eze from Monte Carlo.

Thanks!

Sharyn

Sharyn,

It was about 4.5 euros return. One thing you gould do is if you go onto google maps, you can use the new street view (grab the little orange man on the left and place him on the street by the tender port) and you can 'walk' the promenade and have a look at what's about. There is only one station in Villefrance.
