CA Oceanfront Posted September 8, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2009 Has anyone come across SUP lessons in any of the Mexican Riviera or Costa Rica ports lately? The popularity of the sport is growing here in the States but I'm not sure how much of it has spread south of the border yet. I would be particularly interested in the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Huatulco, Puntarenas or Grand Cayman. Thanks!!
Caro C Posted September 11, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 11, 2009 There is a guy here in Cabo that does it over on Medano Beach but only on Tuesdays. He is from either the states or Canada and is down by Baja Cantina on the beach.
Caro C Posted September 12, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 12, 2009 Okay...I just got the preview issue of Planeta Surf magazine from my neighbor who is the founder and editor. And what-do-ya-know...in it is a great ad for Lee, the guy who has Cabo SUP. He is located on Medano between ME Cabo and Casa Dorado. Cell # 045 624 183 3623 and email is lee@bahiacabo.com If you get the magazine, the ad is on pagina 43. The ad says he does lessons and rentals. SUP_Surfer Posted October 31, 2009 #4 Share Posted October 31, 2009 I did a bunch of research into this last year and here's what I found: Cabo - Just cab over to the Cabo Surf Hotel. They have a full rental concession, including SUPs. It may be worth confirming ahead of time that they'll have what you want when you'll be there. Mazatlan - Email alister@mazatlansurfcenter.com. They'll pick you up from the ship & take you surfing, but they don't have any SUPs. I know that Carnival won't let you bring your own board with you, but I believe that Holland America will. PV - First try the Coral Reef Surf Shop. They have a good selection of rental SUPs. They have a boat for tours along Punta Mita, but they weren't running it last winter. Also try Javier Chavez chavezjav@gmail.com or tours@wildmex.com. He will pick you up, take you out and rent you a board, but it's slightly expensive. He quoted me $100 for transport, $60 for guiding and $35 per SUP board for rental. It probably makes more sense if you've got a group. To be fair, though, the surf spots aren't very close to the ship, so it's a long way to go. I hope this helps. If anyone else has other ideas, I'm interested since I'm doing this trip again in early December.
CRsurf Posted April 11, 2013 #5 Share Posted April 11, 2013 In Costa Rica, close to the port of Puntarenas is the beach town of Jaco, that has multiple places to rent SUPs and surfboards, plus do tours. Try Vista Guapa - http://www.vistaguapa.com - who use YOLO boards. Or Chucks WoW Surf Shop - http://www.wowsurf.com. Or Del Mar Surf Camp - http://www.delmarsurfcamp.com. Or for just lessons try Debbie Zec, a former Costa Rican competitive surfer who lives in Jaco - http://www.dominicalsurflessons.com.
CWcruisers Posted April 15, 2013 #6 Share Posted April 15, 2013 Cabo SUP has several locations on Medano Beach. The best IMHO is between two restaurants, The Sand Bar and Medano Beach Club. They do lessons along with the rental, then go to either restaurant afterwards for refreshment.
