CRUISERFW Posted September 24, 2009 #51 Share Posted September 24, 2009 Usually we travel with friends and just the 4 of sat at a table. On our last cruise it was just two of us and we usually sat with other people and we were lucky that we had some very nice people sitting at our table, but we did sit by ourselves several times also. rrobynec Posted September 24, 2009 #52 Share Posted September 24, 2009 I have never asked to share a table (not sure why not, since I do dine alone sometimes), but have often just struck up conversations with adjoining tables.
librarycin Posted September 24, 2009 #53 Share Posted September 24, 2009 My upcoming cruise will be my first NCL cruise, so I am used to traditional dining. I am travelling with a friend, so we will not always be eating together, as we'll be doing our own things. I would like to share a table with other people. Just asking for a bit of advice: I wonder if it would be better to ask for a larger table, so it's not just me and one other couple, for instance? Or will I be o.k. anyway, as they would have to agree to share before I was seated with them anyway? Thoughts/ideas? Thanks for any suggestions. I am happy to see as many people here willing to share as there are, as I was afraid people wouldn't want to at all, and I'd be stuck eating alone if my friend and I were not ready to eat at the same time. When you agree to sit with others, you go to whatever table they have started to seat others at, it may be large or smaller. Sometimes no one wants to sit with others in which case it could be awkward I suppose as you might end up by yourself.
NCSunshine Posted September 24, 2009 #55 Share Posted September 24, 2009 on our recent cruise to the Baltic, we mostly sat with just the 5 of us, 2 adults/3 children.. We decided one night, after arriving at dinner a little later than we normally do, to try to option of sitting with others. This worked as we welcomed a couple we had seen at a captains reception earlier in the evening. We had a nice conversation, mostly about our past cruises, the cruise line, where we lived, etc.. and went our separate ways. My husband decided, after a few more meals with our children not being the most wonderful eaters, we would do this again. but the worst part was, ever time we saw the other couple around the ship, I would make an attempt to say hello and they would just walk on by, like they have never seen us or spoken to us before. Anyway.. I would have really enjoyed meeting more people and you can do this by taking advantage of the freestyle dining with others.. and you don't have to sit with the same people every night. Right...a number of times we asked to be seated with others, only to end up eating alone when no one else wanted to share the table. On the other hand it can be an effective strategy to get seated more quickly on a night when you would have to wait for a table for two.

If I want to do that, I'll go to the buffet. I guess I can't control whether or not anyone else will want to eat with someone else, though. My friend and I are going to try to eat together as much as possible, but I know it won't always be possible.
MrLee Posted September 24, 2009 #58 Share Posted September 24, 2009 We prefer a table for 2. We can eat at our own pace and we don't have to worry about the "tablemates from hell" that we have encountered on 2 (assigned seating) cruises. Just bad luck I know but we have enough of that in the casino...we don't need to bring it to dinner. ;)
beetle9 Posted September 25, 2009 #59 Share Posted September 25, 2009 On a trans atlantic 14 day cruise we were seated with a couple from england and had a good time all 14 nights. The wives even exchanged addresses and sent some pictures to each other.
ruffs Posted September 25, 2009 #60 Share Posted September 25, 2009 I travel alone, so I'm okay with sharing or not. Whatever's easier for the people who seat me works fine. No offense to anyone, but my only request is "no children." I've had abysmal experiences with fambuhlee types, and don't care to repeat them. I want to request 'no children' as well, but I'm sure my wife will object and our kids will be following us around anyway. It's worth a try though.
