steelerannie Posted September 23, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 23, 2009 The trips are usually very good. We usually choose to do 2 official trips a week depending on the itinerary. A lot of places you can do your own thing. If you do decide to make your own way round, make sure you are back on board in plenty of time. The ship will wait a certain amount of time, but eventually it will sail - we've been onboard when people have been left. If you check Thomson's site it will show you details of trips http://www.thomsonbeach.co.uk/th/cruise/viewPorts.do Ann
budgie1 Posted September 23, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 23, 2009 Monte Carlo (Villefranche), Step off the shuttle boat and walk down to the train station (5 mins) Train leave about 9.30 and cost us 22 euro for 2 adults and 1child return. Takes about 45 mins. Walk out the station at MonteCarlo and turn right up the hill towards the Palace. Lots to do up there with loads of shops and cafes. Take the Noddie train 10 euro p/per. Train Stop at the Palace gates. This will take you along the coast towards the Casino. Saves you having a long walk. Get the 2.30 train back to Villefranche and spend an hour on the beach. Jump back onto the shuttle boats. They come and go all day. If you want you can get a bus to either Nice or Monte Carlo for 1 euro each way. Very Cheap indeed. Rome Get the train. 9 euro return p/pers. 2 stops in Rome. The first stop will get near the Vatican. Second stop - Terminie will get you into the centre. You can walk to all the sights from there. Both these trips organised by the ship will cost you £30 plus per person. A lot more for Rome. So your better off going it alone. Ensure you give yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship. Take the ships tel number with you just in case you may be late. Tel number advertised each day on their daily news paper. Its no different to nipping into town from where we live. Its just a different country. Have fun.

steelerannie Posted September 24, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 24, 2009 Whenever we've been to Rome we've always done the Thomson's tours. The guides have been excellent and we thought well worth the money. The first time in Florence we were on an official tour and the bus was 2 hours late getting back!!! We were actually the first tour back other buses were 3-4 hours late, it has a public holiday and the roads were choc a block!! We had to tender back to the ship - the Captain was on the quay side doing his nut!!!! Ann
cumberlander Posted January 27, 2010 #6 Share Posted January 27, 2010 In Rome we got the coach in from the ship then had TEN hours free time wtihout a guided tour. Plenty of time to wander around on our own, knowing we would be safely picked up. We did the Monte-Carlo, Monaco trip too which was lovely. its, only,me Posted January 27, 2010 #7 Share Posted January 27, 2010 I think that because it,s your first cruise maybe you would feel better doing the rome tour with the ship we did and it was well worth it and then we know that we would be back in time for the ship to sail :) mrs.c

Which tour did you do? Was it the one with the Vatican or the other one doing ancient Rome. Berwyn
