Smoking on the Destiny

Let me preface this thread by asking that you keep the flames for somewhere else. I'm merely looking for information, as my wife is asthmatic and lots of smoke will make my sinuses go nuts. We live pretty much 100% of our lives in a smoke-free environments (home, work & smoking is banned in indoor venues in Ohio), so any smoking will obviously be a shock to our systems.

 

Question 1: On the Carnival Destiny, where are you permitted to smoke? Are the following correct? (please let me know about the "not sure" parts)

 

From what I've seen in the Capers and elsewhere:

 

Yes - Onyx Cigar Room, Point After Dance Club, Destiny's Bar (at least a portion of it), cabins/balconies, and the starboard side of the Lido deck.

 

No - Downbeat Lounge, Criterion, Palladium, Flagship Bar, port side of the Lido Deck and all dining areas.

 

Not Sure - Apollo Bar, All-Star Sports Bar, Cheers, Solar Bar, Stellar Bar.

 

Question 2: I love to play blackjack. How bad does the smoke get at the blackjack tables and/or is there a better time (e.g. early in day) to play that generally avoids smokier situations?

 

Question 3: With it's close proximity to the casino, how smokey does Destiny's Way get?

 

Question 4: I understand that the cabin hallways can sometimes get smokey (due to people smoking in their cabins & leaving their hallways doors open and/or smoking in the hallway) - how much is it really?

If those place are mentioned in the Capers, then it's correct.

 

I suppose the smoking areas could change, so it's a good idea to check the Capers for your sailing.

 

I do know, for sure, that smoking is allowed in cabins and on balconies.

 

As far as smoke from the casino along Destiny's Way....that would depend on the number of smokers on any particular sailing.

 

Smoking is allowed starboard. One thing I thought was strange was...on the starboard side, at the main pool area, is a bar. Smoking is allowed starboard, but half of the bar was non-smoking.

 

The only time I've ever smelled smoke in the hallways was on Legend.

The Capers that I saw from Falkor's review in September, 2008, were this:

Guests are welcome to smoke in the following areas: Casino, Point After Disco, Lido Deck - Starboard Side and Cigar smoking is only permitted in the Onyx Bar. Thank you.

 

Thus, I'm sure those areas allow it. However, I also read in his review that Destiny's Bar had a small smoking section and the Apollo Bar had smoking. Elsewhere, I've read the All-Star bar allows smoking, so I'm a bit confused. That said, I'm trying to see if I can get some updated information on my first question, as well as some info on the other questions (which you definitely helped on!).

Oops...just noticed from later Capers in Falkor's post (after day one of his cruise), that the Apollo Bar was indeed added to the list of "smoking is okay" areas. Sorry for the confusion.

Hmm...looks like they changed smoking areas from the Apollo Bar to the All-Star Bar. Personally would've preferred it the other way, but hey, you have to accomodate all, I suppose. Thanks for the update, Mona!

 

If I stay on the port side of the Lido Deck, it appears the only concerns for me are the casino and the All-Star bar, since I'm not a dancer. Good to hear!

 

Anyone able to shed any insight on the blackjack table question? Notably, is the smoke heaviest in the evenings, I presume, thus making afternoon BJ not too bad for me? I really don't care when I play, esp. since the DW and two DS have activities of their own to keep them occupied!

If you are wanting a 100% reassurance that you won't encounter cigarette smoke on a cruise, you aren't going to get it.

 

I am a smoker, but I adhere to the smoking/non smoking sections, but many do not practice this. Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, and NCL, all the lines I have been on, almost never enforce the non smoking rules.

 

I recently returned from the Freedom, and I observed smoking in non smoking areas daily, and always close by was a crew member that never requested that the smoker in the non smoking area put out their cigarette.

 

The safe area's are always the dining room and show room lounges, but pretty much everywhere else I have seen smokers smoking where they weren't suppose to. Where it be a innocent mistake made by the smoker, or a intential choice not to observe the non smoking rules, either way it happens.

 

Many have said that the hallways are non smoking on the cabin decks. I disagree with this. I saw smoking in the cain hallways everyday on all of the cruises I have been on, most recently the Freedom 2 weeks ago. The Promenade deck also has alot of smoking going on in that location.

 

So if you are wanting a vacation that you won't come into contact with cigarette smoke, cigar smoke, or pipe smoke, you won't find it on a cruise.

Watch the tables, maybe you can find one without smokers. No way to tell if morning less than evening. Also cigars are enjoyed on Lido deck, cabins and balcony.

LOL, no I definitely EXPECT smoking on the ships, but am just trying to minimalize our exposure to it. I figure there are safer areas than others, and thus will likely avoid the areas where it's permitted outright, aside from the casino, perhaps. Alas, what you are saying in this post is what concerns me (hopefully nowhere near the point of ruining my cruising pleasure) - when smokers don't adhere to the non-smoking areas, whether by choice or by ignorance.

I've had the opposite experience as CarnivalCruiseLover.

 

I've never seen anyone smoke in a non-smoking area (granted, I can't be everywhere at once).

 

I've never seen anyone smoke in a hallway (still can't be everywhere at once).

 

Every sailing is different. Maybe you'll be lucky and the ship will be full of non-smokers!

Nope. I am a smoker, but I respect smokers rights along with non smoker's rights. Gets tiring hearing all the fuss about smoking.

 

Like John Heald said a few weeks ago. The smoking policy and the amount of spaces designated for smoking has overwhemingly decreased, and yet the non smokers still want more!

I was just echoing what a smoker (CCL) said - smokers sometimes light up in areas they shouldn't. That can be either intentional (choice) or - FAR more likely - because they are innocently unaware it's a NS area (ignorance).

 

No flaming intended at all. Just an observation that concerns me.

Obviously you don't smoke, we know that, and it's obvious you don't like smoke, but the bottom line is smoking is legal. And as far as cruies are concerned, smokers cruise, smokers gamble, drink, take shore excursions, buy in the gift shops, and the list goes on and on. Why would the cruise companies COMPLETELY remove smokers from their passenger list? They won't, so as long as it's still legal, you will have smokers on a cruise ship.

The Paradise experiment pretty conclusively proved that. I feel bad for the lines, frankly, as they try to draw the fine line in segregating areas between smoking & non-smoking.

Realistically, though...I didn't want to turn this into a debate (thus my very first comment). I just wanted to make sure the info, as I understood it, was correct. Merely an information gathering thread, so let's get back to that.

 

Question #1: Appears that this is right, except that All-Star is a yes, while Apollo is now a no and the pool bars are half & half. Still not sure about Cheers, but I probably won't use it much, so it doesn't matter much.

Question #2: Sounds like it's just going to be hit and miss. Understandable. In most casinos, they are more crowded (and thus likely more smoking) in the evenings. I'm assuming that's true on a cruise ship, and thus would probably do better early on.

Question #3: It appears it's not a big deal.

Question #4: Again, hit or miss, apparently, leaning more towards the "probably not an issue".

If anyone else wants to weigh in on the original question, feel free to do so if you have other info/advice. Otherwise, I apologize for letting this thing derail and let's let it die.

Not arguing or agreeing. Simply stating facts. There are alot less smoking areas then there was 10, 15, 20, or 5 years ago. When is enough enough?
