Guayaquil, Equador- What to do??

We will be in Guayaquil for a day later this month, prior to meeting up with our Lindblad group for our Galapagos/Machu Pichu trip. Does anyone have suggestions for sightseeing in Guayaquil? Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers, Pam

Go to Montecristi for the market and the home of Panama Hats (no, they are not made in Panama). The whole town of Montecristi makes Panama hats. In Guayaquil, there is a cathedral and the riverfront (Malecon 2000) has been renovated and is finally finished. Lots of shops, places to eat, etc. etc. Don't miss the iguanas in Iguana park-they are huge-up to 6 feet in length.

If it was my trip, I would find a taxi to Montecristi first, then go back into Guayaquil for the iguanas, Malecon, etc. Don't forget to look for alpaca sweaters in the Montecristi market. Generic alpaca sweaters can usually be found for about $15.00. Not high end, but definitely worth the money for a casual sweater. Great Xmas presents. Enjoy!!!

Here's some info about Montecristi and the hats.
