Can anyone recommend any shops that sell locally made items? I would move beyond the straw market and find some nice shops within walking distance of the pier.

Plait Lady - the original shop is on East Bay Street, a few blocks from the pier. There's a new store front at the marina Village at Atlantis as well.

There are some shops in the plaza's that sell jewelry, tiles, ceramics etc.

The only authentic items in the straw market are the wood carvings on the outside of the tent on the western side (near senor frogs), and some artists on the wharf nearby.
