uk passport holder can i drive from skagway Alaska over the border into canada?

I realise I clear US immigration upon boarding the ship in Vancouver, but wanted to hire a car for the day in Skagway which would involve going over the border .Is there a border control and does it take long either leaving or going back into Skagway.I have a Us tempory Visa in A British passport.
