Mexican Riviera - Oct. 17, 2009: Question from Princess Pax...

For anyone on the Carnival cruise to the Mex Riviera, I'd like to know how your cruise was affected by Hurricane Rick.

We were on the Princess Sapphire that left San Pedro about the time you did... we got diverted to San Fran and West coast ports.

We heard that your cruise made it through to some of the Mexican ports. Curious to know if that's true and how the hurricane affected your ship.

thanks

We were in Ensenada on Monday (instead of a sea day), PV on Thursday and Cabo on Friday. We skipped Mazatlan only. The Mariner of the Seas and a Celebrity ship were in PV and Cabo with us. We did not have rain anywhere, and it was quite hot in PV and Cabo. We had a great time in all of the ports.

We heard the ocean was rough... was that not the case?? Also... when did you leave long beach?

We left Long Beach on Sunday at around 6:30 pm. The seas were not bad-we had a night where it was rough, and perhaps some spots during the day, but the seas were not rough constantly. Our Alaska cruise had rougher seas than what we experienced on the Splendor.

I was on the Carnival Spirit that left San Diego 10/18/19 and needless to say Hurricane Rick was on everyone's mind. We got hit with rough seas on the first 2 days at sea, especially the second day when we were the closest to Rick. Initially there was talk about going around Rick but we headed straight to beat it which downgraded to a Tropical Storm. Our itinerary did not change one bit, in fact we made it to Acapulco a little early. We caught the tail end of the storm. It was windy, overcast and rainy on the second sea day but once we got to Acapulco, the rest of the trip was fabulous.

We were also on the Splendor, as Peach says, we were in Ensenada Monday and I'd say the roughest seas were actually that night and some of the next day, but then it was pretty normal (a little rough on the way back, but that's usual on that itinerary). DH and I did the Pinnacle Steakhouse on Wednesday night and it was raining pretty good when we were up there (the windows there have no overhang, so it was blowing against the windows pretty good), later we went to the main pool and they had closed the sliding top and were moving all the loungers and squeegying the floors, it was really wet, so I think it was a short downpour that didn't really hamper anything. At embarkation, we were given a letter saying we were going to go 'around' Rick (later the captain said he planned on 100 miles off Cabo to do that), but as Rick moved faster to the east than originally planned, he was able to keep the normal path from Ensenada to PV and we could see Cabo as usual when passing by. Other than missing Mazatlan, the cruise was normal and we had a great time!

I Was on the 10/18 on spirit too,and it was only a lil rough(2-4ft) waves, and we basically hugged the coastline all the way down, and fast enough to outrun rick, before he was suppose to curve back towards cabo, and we had a great cruise. Itinerary was 2 sea days,acapulco,Ixtapia,mansenillo,2 seadays, san diego, was our first on carnival cruise, which turned out to be a good cruise, and was happy with service, rooms, etc etc,;)

It sure seems like the Pacific side has gotten the bigger hurricanes this season. Poor Splendor...first the swine flu outbreak and then Hurricane Rick :( Glad though that you all enjoyed yourselves anyway and didn't have to alter your itineraries very much! :p

We went to San Francisco, Catalina, San Diego, and Ensenada (Jones act requirement).

It would have been nicer had we not been from Southern California... we visit San Diego a lot... and Catalina is... well, what can you say about Catalina? There's just nothing to do there. And of course, Ensenada is Cabo San Lucas WITHOUT the warmer weather & water, nicer stores, better food, and CABO WABO!! :D
