DallasSteve Posted January 7, 2005 #1 Share Posted January 7, 2005 Okay, it's been over a year since I was on my last cruise :( , BUT I'm getting ready for another one :). The last time, Royal Caribbean had implemented a policy of no handshaking to try and control the spreading of germs on the ship. Does anyone know if that policy is still in effect? Thanks. nosnobunny Posted January 7, 2005 #2 Share Posted January 7, 2005 My cruise last March wasn't on RCCL but I was told that during the Captain's Cocktail party, the crew now has a policy of no more hand shaking. It appeared to be a permanent move. Beth
truffles2 Posted January 7, 2005 #3 Share Posted January 7, 2005 The Captain on Grandeur shook hands last month.
SeaBreezy Posted January 7, 2005 #4 Share Posted January 7, 2005 I cruised twice in '04 with RCCL and shook hands with people that worked aboard the ship. Officers to crew. A ban on handshaking? I've never heard of such a thing!
Honey's Gal Posted January 7, 2005 #5 Share Posted January 7, 2005 Hello Truffles2, I see you went on the Grandeur again. Did you have a great time? We were on the Serenade in October, and while we did not go to the Captains cocktail party, so I don't know if he shook hands, the greeters in the Windjammer hugged a lot until we were in Aruba. Getting back on board from Aruba, they had the sanitizing gel outside by the boarding area and requested that we use it prior to boarding. Then, in the Windjammer that afternoon, again the same gel and requests to use it. The greeters were not hugging anymore and apolpgized. As far as I know, no one was sick. Globaliser Posted January 7, 2005 #6 Share Posted January 7, 2005 Mind you, "proper" social protocol is so deeply ingrained into many (especially Europeans) that, even on ships on which the policy is in effect, you can pretty easily get the officers and staff to shake hands with you if you really insist. (And more, too, when you get to know particular individuals really well.)
txfirstcruiser Posted January 7, 2005 #7 Share Posted January 7, 2005 Funny that on our cruise (7 day) the only day that the hand sanitizer stations were put out and about was the last day, horrible seas and winds, little white bags all around, waitstaff and crew even seasick...go figure. wingnutphl Posted January 7, 2005 #8 Share Posted January 7, 2005 Truffles2 and I were on the same cruise and the captain shook my hand as well. I didn't see anyone shying away from handshaking. I never heard of such a thing.
truffles2 Posted January 7, 2005 #9 Share Posted January 7, 2005 Hi Honey's Gal, Yes we did have a great time on Grandeur....and we were able to drive to New Orleans (long, but no longer than flying)! Wingnut, on one of our recent cruises (can't remember which one) the captain would not shake hands. Thought it was a little odd. (and awkward)
Arizona Cruz Chic Posted January 7, 2005 #10 Share Posted January 7, 2005 Never saw a ban on hand shaking. I do wish they would put out the hand sanitizer stations at the beginning of each cruise. Some cruises they weren't put out at all, others mid-to-end of the cruise, it made no rhyme or reason...put them up at the beginning to help cut down on germs. :) ***
maryr65 Posted January 8, 2005 #11 Share Posted January 8, 2005 On the Mariner last month, my DH went to shake Captain Johnny's hand at the C&A cocktail party and he said it was against RCCL policy. Yet he shook hands with people at the welcome party later. Makes no sense.
