sgmburt Posted October 29, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2009 What does OBC stand for? I am VERY new to cruising and at times don't understand all the language. Thanks!

On Board Credit -- this is a $$amount in your HAL account for you to spend against

Sprocket Posted October 29, 2009 #4 Share Posted October 29, 2009 If you wish you may also purchase OBC ahead of your sailing. We like to prepay as much as possible, Pinnacle, Wine Card, and OBC. If you're interested in doing this it can be done from the Hal site or by calling Ships Services.
jtl513 Posted October 29, 2009 #5 Share Posted October 29, 2009 OBC is also sometimes called SBC - ship board credit. Some OBCs - such as those given by TAs (Travel Agents) as a booking bonus - are allegedly "use it or lose it". I can't verify that, as I've never had a problem using them! :)
sgmburt Posted October 29, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted October 29, 2009 Does this have anything to do with the credit card hold they put on at the beginning of the cruise? Can you pay in advance instead of having to give your credit card? Not sure how it all works at this point.

Not sure how it all works at this point. You can buy yourself OBC "gifts" on the HAL site or by calling Ship Services at 800-541-1576. They are essentially an advance cash deposit against your final bill. If you buy enough you would not have any hold put on your credit card ... but you would be using your credit card today to buy them, and they would be charged today. Since these are not the free OBCs given by a TA or HAL itself, any excess you pay will be refunded in cash at the cruise end.
