Civitavecchia

We are doing a Nice-Rome, Rome-Venice next year back to back. Any thoughts on something to do on our Civitavecchia port day other than go into Rome? We've been in Rome (the historic center) the last couple of years either starting or ending in Rome and I'd like to do something different.

We were just in Civitavecchia about a month ago. We flew into DaVinci airport in the morning, picked up a rental car and then drove to Ostia Antica, but it was raining too hard to enjoy exporing it. We then drove up to Civitavecchia and continued on to Tarquinia to see the necropolis and to visit the museum. It was nice for a couple of hours although most of the museum descriptions are in Italian which was understandable but disappointing for non-Italian speakers like us.

If you have the time and inclination, and if the weather is decent, I would definitely recommend Ostia Antica because it's such an impressive ruin, but Tarquinia is a possible second choice. There's also a nice little winery on the way to Tarquinia if you want some wine-tasting.

We spent the night in Civitavecchia and boarded the Windstar the next day.

The Hertz office is within easy walking distance from the entrance to the port, and shuttles will take you to the port entrance.
