G'ma Posted December 2, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 2, 2009 It was Carnival's "Fantasy"...the first of 8 Fantasy class vessels.... Fantasy, delivered in 1990, still enjoys the same reputation for sparkling, innovative design concepts as the day it entered service. The first newly built cruise liner with a diesel-electric AC propulsion and power system, and joystick controlled navigation, the Fantasy offers spectacular salons and lounges with themes of time and distance. The first cruise ship to have a seven-deck central atrium, called the Grand Spectrum, Fantasy began the Carnival tradition of the largest spa and exercise facilities in the industry. Rare Hlitner Posted December 2, 2009 #3 Share Posted December 2, 2009 Oh my! We will have to disagree (respectfully) with the previous post. The Sovereign of the Seas was the first ship to have a real atrium (they called it a Centrum), In fact, the designer of that ship was knighted by the Queen...one of the reasons being that he solved the engineering problems of how to put a large atrium on a ship and still conform to safety standards. spongerob Posted December 2, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 2, 2009 I think you would have to go back 100 years or more to find your answer. Atria, alternative dining, and a host of other "modern" innovations were included in ship designs back in the days of the early ocean liners. A German ship, Amerika, had the first specialty restaurant, and if memory serves she was launced in 1905. Royal Princess had an atrium (though not grand by any stretch of the imagination) and was launched 4 years earlier than SOS.
