That was good filming, as I understood it, his life jacket was not on right and was caught under his chin pushing him backwards.

what with the missing passengers and the nov 18th storm it was a memerable crossing and cruise.

At least one disappeared in Barbados. A few things left behind.

This disappearance in Barbados, did it ever get officially addressed?

I dont know, I do know that my information was good and that we all think they just left the ship there.

I still have not heard from the people who got left behind in Panama, except that one was a waiter who had a lift from the pilot boat and made it back, didnt get sacked either, so he was a good waiter?

I just hope that everyone is OK

One female passenger traveling alone. They did a cabin search, nothing in the safe. One empty suitcase and a sweater in the cabin along with a few cosmetic items. It was determined that she must have debarked in Barbados. They apparently scanned her out but not in again. I would have checked her citizenship info to determine if she resided in Barbados. One would hope that they followed up with the emergency contact to find out what happened. My two dealings with the purser's office would lead me to doubt that. They didn't seem to be all that analytical.

Bon Voyage

I believe that passengers 'chased' the ship when it was leaing NY on Nov 17th, that a female pasenger fell between the tender and the ship on the first day of tendering and a medical alert on 12 deck at the end of the cruise, but I had not heard of the missing passenger.

One hears broadcasts for "Will XXX please contact the Pursers office ' so often after a day in port. However I do find it odd that she left behind a suitcase, sweater and cosmetic items, unless of course she was really looking to disappear. Is it posible that she was rather under the influence and she got back on the wrong ship?

The ship uses VHF frequencies for on board communications. I am a licensed amateur radio operator and have equipment that will pick up those frequencies. It is totally legal. If they wanted, they could use encoded signals like some law enforcement agencies do. That is how I knew about the missing passenger.

Well, this solves the mystery, assuming you are suggesting that you "overheard" the relevant communications. However, it would seem to me, that if the passenger signed out, that they were not "missing" if they did not reboard, but like the few unfortunate who do not make it back in time? Big difference...IMHO...many of us were very worried about these unfounded reports of missing passengers, so I am glad that you have cleared up the source of the rumors...

I wonder how many people, for whatever reason, fail to make it back to the ship on time during the course of an average cruise. My guess is that it must be a fair few.

I know this will sound like I'm a real wimp, but it's the fear of not getting back in time for sailing that makes me favour Cunard shore excursions over private tours. At least if a Cunard shore excursion bus fails to make it back on time, there's a pretty fair chance the ship will wait. I don't think they'd be so accommodating for a private tour.

QM2 has a helicopter pad. You could always make use of it if need be.

We were on a Celebrity ship and the "late" passengers hired a small boat to bring them to the already sailing ship. The captain stopped the ship and they climbed on board via a rope ladder. Supposedly Celebrity fined them for all the hoopla.

Yes, I read that story somewhere - it may even have been on here. I can well believe that Celebrity fined them.

My very favorite is when a group arrived late at the pier, they all ran full speed along the side of the ship looking for the gangplank which wasn't there. One man ran right off the end of the pier. They had all come from Carlos and Charleys. :)

On one of my early cruises on the Nordic Prince a bride and groom, the bride in white gown and veil and the groom in morning coat with tails were lifted into the ship by some kind of apparatus. It was fun to watch.

Indeed - assuming I could afford a helicopter :D:D:D

And then there was the day I looked out the port hole on the Nordic Prince, only to see a man outside shimmying down a rope hanging from a helicopter. We were half way to Bermuda and I was half undressed. It was quite a shock, I will tell you.

My absolute favourite was about the lady and the postcard in Athens. I can't vouch for the truth of the tale - it may simply have been an urban legend. Anyway, the story goes that she arrived in Piraeus on board some cruise ship or other and decided to take a taxi into central Athens. She spoke no Greek, and was worried about how she would be able to tell the taxi driver on the return trip that she wanted to go back to her ship. Using some pretty good lateral thinking she took with her one of the free postcards that you get along with all the writing material and brochures and so on in the cabin. She had a pretty enjoyable time in Athens and, with time beginning to get a little pressing, she managed to find a taxi ok. However, as luck would have it, the taxi driver spoke no English. But, hey, she had thought of that possibility, so she showed him the postcard with the photo of the ship. He nodded vigorously and smiled broadly, and duly set off. After a bit she began to get a little worried that he didn't appeaer to be heading for Piraeus. Eventually he stopped outside some rather nondescript looking public building and signed to her that she had arrived! Turned out he'd taken her to the post office so she could mail the postcard. Sadly, the version of the story I heard didn't record whether or not she made it back to the ship on time!

Going back to the missing passenger, which did cause some worries when it was reported and then never referred to by the poster, it does all seem quite odd.

The eventual confirmation of the disappearance said that there was an 'empty' suitcase (I think) plus the sweater etc.

This points to either the lady boarding with an empty case or leaving with a bag of clothes and you would wonder what the security would make of that.

Instead of being solved, it makes even more of a mystery.

You just have to hope that he was more preoccupied with the fact that he was hanging from a rope over the water than peeping.

They recently ran a series on one of the cable channels about tourists kidnapped abroad. We are not wimps either, but after watching these shows, decided to opt for the ship booked shore excursions. Listening to the radio, they keep very tight control and which buses are back and which are still MIA. They are also the ONLY cruise line that we have dealt with that sends escorts from the ship along with the tour. Most lines point you to the bus and wave goodbye. At least you get something for the premium price.
