Pearl Harbor Day

I know many people here have been to Pearl Harbor. Today is Pearl Harbor Day.

Wouldn't it be nice for us to remember the day and our visit by posting some of our pictures of Pearl and some of our remembrances

 

I ahve said several times here already, I have a very good friend who served on the Missouri when the Japanese surrendered. he was part of the original crew. He thinks there are only about 8-10 people left who were part of that crew. He talks freely about his time on the Missouri, and especially about the trip home and how the Missouri stopped in so many ports before she came home to SF and how they were greeting like hero's in every port. When we were on the Missouri, I called him just to let him know I made it. I am a Viet Nam vet, so making it to Pearl Harbor was #1 on my list to do, when we got to Hawaii.

Thanks for posting the pictures. Our cruise doesn't leave for another 2 weeks, but like you, my "Must Do" on this trip is the Pearl Harbor Arizona Memorial. My father was a huge WWII historian. I have childhood pictures of being on the Mighty Mo when it was touring ports in the US back in the 70's. I plan on taking flowers to throw into the sea at the memorial if they will still let you do that. I made sure I taught a lesson on the Pearl Harbor attack today (and every year) to my 4th grade class. By the way, Thank you for the sacrifices YOU made during your tour of duty. I know our country wasn't fair to the Vietnam Vets in the 70's, but hope you know that history and gratitude has been instilled in some of us kids which we will pass on to future generations.

My significant other and I are on the Zandaam's April 6,2010 cruise. As soon as we booked the cruise, we booked our excursion to the Arizona. Jack was on the USS Alabama -- they led the US fleet into Tokyo habor for the signing of the surrender.

 

I had trouble getting him to go on our first cruise, which was around South America in 2000. Jack always said he cruised 250,000 miles free--courtesy of the US Navy.

 

 

Our visit in April will be 65 years after Jack's previous visit to the Arizona. He was there 2 years after the bombing and he says at that time there was still oil floating to the surface and the entire harbor smelled of burned oil, metal and sadly, flesh.

 

We've been on a number of cruises and land trips to the far corners of the world but this will be my first visit to Hawaii.

there is STILL oil floating to the surface. If I remember correctly, the guard there said about 3 quarts a day still leak out.

We completred our Pride of America cruise this last Saturday, December 5th. While on Oahu, I had the privilege of visiting the USS Arizona Memorial this past Monday, Dec. 7th. Large crowds, but I expected that. I have visited twice previously, but couldn't pass on attending on Pearl Harbor Day.

 

As of Monday, oil was still seeping up to the surface which was covered with wreaths and flowers.

I want to thank you and your friend for your service to our country. After visiting Pearl this summer, pre-cruise, I was especially honored on December 5th to be invited to the christening of the latest USS Missouri, the nation's newest nuclear attack submarine.

 

The fifth ship to serve her nation with the same name, the latest Mighty Mo continues a great tradition.

Thank you for serving our country and to your friend who was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. My thoughts and prayers go out to all service men and women. I know when i visit Hawaii in April 2011 that is on our priority list of things to see as a way of saying Thank you to all those that lost there life that day.
