gtaylor Posted December 12, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 12, 2009 Are there any shopping or restaurant areas near the port that would be interesting? Or maybe a park or plaza? Thanks. Although the best shopping in the Caribbean is only minutes away by Water Taxi or regular taxi, there is a lot available without even leaving the Cruise Facility. (click) The development there is called Harbour Point Village, and has a variety of shops and stalls.
gtaylor Posted December 12, 2009 #5 Share Posted December 12, 2009 From the Port of St. Maarten website: To further facilitate the cruise visitor there is a small shopping arcade consisting of 12 shops and 12 market-stalls, in an architectural atmosphere of vintage St. Maarten landmarks. Harbour Point Village is meant for those visitors who remain on the vessel or who go on an island-tour and return to the vessel. Those remaining on the vessel still have the opportunity to visit Harbour Point Village and purchase souvenirs for family and friends back home. For those who went on an island tour and didnít have time to do any last minute shopping once they return to the cruise facility, Harbour Point Village presents such an opportunity. <snip> The basic concept for the construction of this village was to bring back the old days. The developers chose to reach this goal by artfully duplicating old buildings form Philipsburg. Merely old buildings, which had been destroyed or demolished in the past, so they could bring the aroma and feel of the old days to the visitor enhancing the visitors total experience. There are already several traditional, high quality shopping centers on the island. This is why this shopping arcade had to be special. Not only for shopping and entertainment, but also to give the visitors a genuine feeling of St. Maarten's History and Culture. The village is reminiscent of those days long gone, but not forgotten. Lots more photos of the Cruise Facility and Harbour Point Village in my PhotoBucket. gary
