SunnyinDubai Posted December 15, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 15, 2009 We are going on a HAL cruise to the South Pacific and we are wondering if our mobile phones and blackberries will work at sea. Does anyone know? thanks. :)
njhorseman Posted December 15, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 15, 2009 Holland America is one of many cruise lines that provide cell phone service at sea through Cellular At Sea. You shouild check their web site here http://www.cellularatsea.com/index.htm to determine if your particular ship and cell phone carrier participate. Most US carriers charge $2.49 per minute for using this shipboard service. There is one ( T Mobile I think) that charges a much higher rate. I have no idea if Australian companies participate. If you wish to use your phone on land you need to check with your carrier whether it can be used in the countries you are visiting, and what the rates are. smeyer418 Posted December 15, 2009 #3 Share Posted December 15, 2009 but be careful because some services not only charge the telephone per minute they also charge for the download or upload of data per kb...which can really rack up off the ships slow service.
