Alaska, Mercury and Formal Wear

I am wondering if anyone can share past experiences with how formal people have been dressed on a Celebrity Alaskan cruise. I have read that passengers tend to be less formal on Alaskan Cruises.

 

If we opt out of the formal nights is it true we aren't allowed in the casino or at shows either?:(

Hi--First of all, congrats on your upcoming cruise to Alaska on the Mercury! You will have a great time. We went last summer and loved every minute of it! I found that people did dress appropritely in the evenings for the dinners; especially the 2 formal ones. Now, that can mean different things to different people, but I wore formal gowns/outfits and my husband had one a dark suit and tie (I would have loved to see him in a tux, but oh well). I think that people looked "casual" in the daytime, but I would have expected that in Alaska, Carribean, in fact anywhere. They did say that to attend the shows one did need to be dressed for that evenings proper attire. However, as we had late seating our shows were before dinner, so we would get dressed, go to the show, and then directly to dinner so it was not a big deal. Plus, it is nice to play dress up every once in a while :)

and at both formal dinners everyone(that I could see) was dressed to the nines. I wore black pants and a gold top one night and a cocktail dress the other.Dh took one dark suit,two shirts and two ties. Dress up and have some fun!

We cruised on the Mercury in Alaska two summers ago. The formal nights were formal. Tuxedos/dark suits for men....with the ladies wearing their equivalent.

 

The dailies will note that the dress code for the evening will be required throughout the ship.

 

Will they enforce that? Probably not. But, if one is dressed very casually, he/she will feel out of place.

 

It's a nice policy.

 

The Mercury is a great ship. We also sailed on the Summit to Alaska. The Mercury was (IMHO) managed better!

we sailed Mercury to Alaska, and formal meant formal..... saw no one out of "dress for the day". Will add, I have never seen so many people in blue jeans on a cruise ship (during the day)

WORFSMOM: Do you think that folks dressed in jeans because of the temperatures in Alaska?

 

We're planning our first Alaskan cruise on Mercury this summer and I've been considering what to pack. Jeans was on the top of my list for day wear (as opposed to the shorts or sun dresses I'd pack for the Caribbean). Too casual? Should I be thinking along other lines? Did you find a light shawl would chase away the chill while dressed in evening attire?

 

LAINEY ELIZABETH: On several cruises I've had early dinner seating and afterward the show changed from binding evening wear into something more comfortable and headed for the casino. I wasn't asked to leave, but I did feel a little out of place. Enjoy your cruise! :)
