debit card or credit card

I may be wrong but I don't think you can use a debit card. We have taken out a Post Office Mastercard with a low limit especially for holidays as they don't charge for foreign currency transactions. You could always lock it in the safe if you don't want to be tempted on shore! Your on-board account will be billed in sterling.

You will be issued with a cruise card on boarding and you carry it with you at all times. It is your security pass to leave and board the ship and is swiped at the gangway every time. It is also used to charge all on-board purchases to your account: bar, excursions, shops, hairdressers, photos, internet etc.

You can use a debit card but not all of them. This is what the P&O website says

For your convenience, P&O Cruises operates a cash-free system on board with Sterling as the currency. This is an automatic process; all you have to do is register your credit card during check-in at the beginning of your cruise. No further action is then necessary. You sign for all purchases and simply settle your account by credit card or debit card at the end of your cruise. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, Visa Delta and Visa Debit. We regret we are unable to accept Switch/Maestro, Solo cards, American Express Prepaid Travellers Cheque Credit cards or Visa Electron. We are also unable to accept payment via cheque or by cash.

If you are travelling on a consecutive cruise, you must settle your on board account at the end of each individual cruise and payment will be taken from your registered credit or Visa debit card. If you are planning to use your credit card ashore, we strongly recommend that you advise your bank or credit card company that you will be visiting several different countries during your P&O Cruises holiday. As a continuing effort to combat credit card fraud, unusual activity, such as transactions in a number of different countries, can often be questioned

We dont use credit cards either and put cash on deposit with the Purser's desk on board on Arcadia recently. At the end

of the cruise we had a refund of the money left over, so dont worry! Also on our MSC cruise we used Euro travel cheques and intend using $ travel cheques when we next cruise with Princess.

I use a credit card, a debit card, should it get hacked into gives access to YOUR bank account/s & carries little or no safeguard. I really don't understand why anyone would not want to do it that way. Worried about overspending? you spend what you spend, what difference does it make which card you use? at least if you overspend on a credit card you can pay it off over time. Unless you have binloads of money you also could run out using a debit card. Of course people may have their own reasons for taking cash...nudge-nudge...
