Glaciers ?

Hey guys I am a little confused. We are going through the Tracy Arm at the end of May, and by what I am reading we would't get much glacier viewing. And I had read BQ say that people should book a boat tour through the Glaciers. So my question is since we are going through Tracy Arm on our cruise should we also try booking a glacier viewing by boat or will we get some glacier viewing on the Spirit? And if so what city?

You don't have that option with this itinerary. You can see Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau or fly over the glaciers from Skagway.

I went through Tracy Arms fjord last August and I saw plenty. It was a rainy day, but I stood on deck 7 for hours. I saw iceburgs, water falls all over, beautiful mountains and a glacier at the end. Do bring some binoculars for this as you can really see a lot more. Or a camera with a large zoom lense will do just fine too.

There are two glaciers, dead end of 30 miles of Tracy Arm. It is doubtful you will get within view in your timeframe. IF you want to see glaciers, then plan on other glacier viewing touring. Mendenhall, is an easy cheap look, but in no way on the grand scale of others. Fly ins are available via, helicopters and planes. Hiking via a long port day out of Juneau.

 

My "boat tour" reference for Tracy Arm, would be for NCL only, or those with long Juneau port times of at least 7a-7p.

We were very lucky in 2005. We left Vancouver on May 31 and my understanding is our ship was the first to be able to get all the way to the glaciers. We were on the NCL Sun and took an excursion which left Juneau ahead of our ship and we "caught up" and boarded her in the fjord. I think the glaciers were great, but the fjord itself was pretty impressive. Lots of waterfalls and very narrow in places.

 

If you would like to see a few of the photos from that trip, you can visit the 2005 cruise link in our signature. When you click on cruise photos, there is a drop down menu in the upper left corner that will list both the Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glacier.

 

I am sure you will have a good time, it is a wonderful place to visit.
