Birth Certificate & Photo ID enough for trip to Emerald Lake?

We are going to rent a car and take the trip up to Emerald Lake in June. I know I have seen this same question on one of the threads before, but I can't find it and I sure don't want to mess up. Is a birth certificate and photo ID good for the trip into Canada and back. We do not have passports.

The birth certificate and driver's license (or other gov't issued photo ID) are all you need, ***as long as you are a citizen of Canada or the US***. Anyone else will need a passport, if only to reenter the U.S. - though it will probably be needed both ways.
