Haiti - suggestion to NCL

Yes, I read some and actually heard some on CNN saying how terrible it was. If those ships pull out, those people should explain to the Haitians why they no longer have income from the ships, and why they are not getting supplies from the ship.

People should not run their mouth without knowing the facts. And the networks should not allow them to do so.

Unfortunately, the networks (and most other "news" outlets) are not in the business of reporting the truth or giving us well considered and well reasoned coverage. They are in the business of attracting eyeballs and selling ads. Hence, the focus on the "sound bite" and the sensational.

Yes, the Carnival ships were were long term vs immediate relief. They were also some of their older ships that had been going on those cheapo cruises. Carnival "rented" them out, just like Home Depot sold supplies, and Delta sold air tickets, etc. etc. Carnival probably also spent alot of money taking care of people that had already booked cruises on those ships.

As to Olympics - yes a company actually chartered the ships to be used as floating hotels during the games.

Carnival leased those ships to the U.S. govt. The ships were trashed and needed to be refurbished afterwards.

As to write offs - please, please understand what a write off is and is not.....

Thanks for the clarification. I 'thought' what you said was the case but felt too stupid to ever ask.

Don't feel bad. Jerry and Kramer didn't know either. ;)

Remember the Carnival ships that were docked for Katrina..remember how much Carnival got paid for that? I remember it turned out it was more then the cruises that they were selling during those times so I think Carnival actually made money on that deal. It was nice of them but don't think they donated three ships for the cause.

Carnival got a better deal than most realize. The ships they "Rented" to the US Government were in serious need of major overhauls.

Carnival didn't want to spend the money to do it.

So not only did they make a fortune on this "Rental", they also convinced the US Government to pay for the overhauls after the rentals were finished.

Quite a sweetheart deal................................

Mickey Arison is a lot smarter than many of those elected officials.

You might want to ask your congressman how Mickey got away with that.
