Car Rental self tour?

Has anyone rented a car in Martinique in the last 6 mo or so? We were thinking of taking the ferry to Pointe du Bout, renting a car there, and driving to Le Diamant Beach & possibly Sainte Anne Beach.

 

Do you know how long of a drive that would be? How are the roads?
