Bath – Day tour or on the way to Southampton?

We will be staying in London for several days before our cruise out of Southampton. Should we take a day trip to Bath (either tour or train)? Or take the train from London to Bath (overnight stay), and then on to Southampton for our cruise?

Given the logistics of the distance from London to Bath and down to Southampton, plus dealing with the hassles of your luggage, etc., I would suggest doing Bath as a day-trip from London. Bath is nice, but you also have some other super-great options from London. This includes Oxford and the charming Cotswolds, Cambridge, nearby Hampton Court and/or Windsor Castle, Kent/south of London castles & homes, etc. From our past experiences, we have found these "other options" to be higher up on our scale of what we loved and enjoyed most. Nothing wrong with Bath. I would just consider ALL of your many great options.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

If you look at a map it doesn't make sense to visit Bath on the way to Southampton. Its over 2 hours to Bath from London and a similar time from Bath to Southampton by vehicle.

Assuming you have to check in for your cruise by 3 pm, that doesn't leave much time in Bath.

I would use train all the way. Train from Paddington to Bath, stay in Bath for a night or two then there are hourly trains between Bath and Southampton taking about 90 minutes, faster than a vehicle can do it. Bath is worth at least a day and you can visit great places like Glastonbury, Stonehenge, Lacock, Castle Coombe, Wells, Cheddar Gorge etc if you want to stay 2 days.
