Tractone phone will it work on the boat

Thinking of borrowing a friends tactone phone and buying time. Will it work on board? At the ports?

We have done this and it worked in the US only as I remember it. I know it worked in Key West and Miami but would not work anywhere else. This was 3 years ago though so perhaps there is more coverage now. Maybe you can find a current coverage map?

My daughter has one too and it did not work at sea, only in port.

Generally prepaid phones will not work for international roaming which is what the ship towers register as.

Please be aware that the T & C's of TracPhone PROHIBIT using third party billing systems (900 numbers, ship cell towers, hotel billing systems). The phone can be shut off, never to be reactivated without a new SIM card and a new airtime card. The SIM will COST $29.95 and the phone number will be changed. You may as well just throw the phone away and start over.

 

TracPhone lost over $1,000,000 in 2007-2008 due to third party billings. Carlos Slim, owner of TracPhone and one of the richest men in the world, didn't get rich letting the "little things" slide by. TracPhone is cracking down very hard on their phones being used by systems that bill the service provider (which in this case is TracPhone), EXPECTING the service provider to bill the actual user. NOT possible with a prepaid TracPhone.

 

Since it is your friends phone, not a very good idea.

It works all over the US and San Juan and St. Thomas. I have had one for 5 years and many cruises in that time. :D :cool::D
