Hi there!

I posted earlier asking about an Alaska cruise with a 9 year old boy - the response was a resounding YES! Could anyone plese give some feedback on Shockwaves on the Golden Princess and kids activities? It looks as if we will be going mid June.

Cheers,

Ollie.

We're going in August to Alaska with our 8 and 9 year old sons. What did you think of Shockwaves?

Thanks!

I think the OP is talking about going on the cruise, not that he or she had already gone on it.

Hopefully by mid-June, there will be plenty of kids out of school. But some school districts may still be in session. By August, there should be plenty of kids, especially the first couple of weeks.

It's been over six years since my daughter was on an Alaskan cruise in that age group (it was called Pirateers back then). There were lots of activities so she wasn't bored. There was also at least one kids' dinner in which parents dropped off their kids in the Horizon Court (on the side with the "private party" sign). Afterwards, the counselors will escort the kids to the kids' area for the evening program.

We were very happy with the programs and activities at Shockwaves (and Pelicans), as well as the caregivers, in general. People have different personalities/styles, but we never encountered a caregiver who gave us a poor impression, and many were very good.

They're very careful about not releasing kids to anyone not authorized. That's a good thing, even though I had to get off my butt a couple times to get our kids because we forgot to add an adult in our group to the authorized check-out list. :D

Yes, they do have video games in Shockwaves, but they seem to do a good job of mixing up the schedule and designating certain times for coordinated/participatory activities as well as free play.

We even left our kids in the ship's care for a couple of hours while my wife and I enjoyed some q-time on shore at Sitka. The kids never complained about going to Shockewave/Princess Pelicans. Many times, they couldn't wait to go and have fun with their new friends.

When our kids were younger they all participated in each of the three levels of youth programs that Princess offers. My girls, now 22, 19 and 16 still talk with their cruise friends from 8 years ago. We've even had the friends visit our home and vice versa. We've been please with the programs and the counselor's and never had one problem. I highly recommend it.

Good luck to you and enjoy your cruise.
