BaltimoreChickadee Posted January 28, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2010 is that a dumb question to ask? we're doing the 7-night eastern caribbean cruise and wondering if our balcony will be sunny or in the shade. does one side of the ship get more sun than the other in regards to the balconies in staterooms? tbjl24 Posted January 28, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2010 is that a dumb question to ask? Let's call it unique. ;) With the constant movement of the ship, clouds and rotation of the earth, it is almost impossible to determine which side will be sunnier than the other. jcm996 Posted January 28, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2010 If you are sailing due south the port side will get sun, starboard side will be shady in the am. If you are sailing due north the starboard side will get sun and the port side will be shady in the am. These will be opposite in the pm. If you are sailing due east the starboard side will be more sunny since you are north of the equator. Opposite is true if you are sailing due west. Using these examples you can try to calculate sun for non due compass points and sun.

In other words, it probably doesn't matter too much which side you are on. Going out, you may have sun, but if so, coming back you will probably have shade.
