giving passport information to tour guides

There are eight of us sailing on the Quest next month. My brother in law found us a tour guide in Hanoi who sounds good. He wants our names and passport numbers now. We didn't have a problem with it, but his AAA travel agent said we shouldn't give this out. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks

The tour guide is required to have this information when they apply for a permit to do the tour for the group. I don't know if there is any way to be able to have a tour without providing the information.

We had the same requests in Vietnam and were also told the info. is required for the tour companies to be able to get into the port areas to pick us up.

They need the passport info to get permits to pick you up inside the port. In Saigon the tour guides are charged $20.00pp.

We had private tours in all ports in Vietnam. They need to info to enter port areas. Had no problem.
