Travel from Venice to Assisi

We really enjoyed spending a few nights in Assisi and recommend the town as a base rather then simply a day-trip destination. It is an interesting drive between Venice and Assisi with some interesting places along (or near that route) including Bologna and Ferrara. It also gets pretty close to San Marino which is a fun country to visit to say you have been to the place......but after an hour its time to head back to Italy.

Can't imagine a day trip to Assisi from Rome; it is doable by train but not worth the trouble as you would spend a huge amount of your day on the train. Assisi is wonderful, the cathedral is just amazing, but it is a long way from Rome!

An overnight car trip from Venice would be fun to do, however. If you take the train to Florence, you are going way past Assisi and have to backtrack, but I'm not sure if there's an easier way. Italians love to backtrack. We were staying in San Gimignano and going to Rome; they wanted us to go 60 miles back to Florence before heading south again. I was able to find a more local and direct route for 1/3 the price, and only an hour longer, so it pays to check out all possible routes.
