kathle2036 Posted January 30, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 30, 2010 We will be boarding a ship in Venice and will arrive a few days early. Would like to go to Assisi. I can't find any tours that do it. Anyone have suggestions.
euro cruiser Posted January 30, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 30, 2010 I suspect the reason you can't find any tours is because Assisi is about 250 miles (5 hours) away from Venice. You can do it on your own by renting a car or taking the train (Venice to Florence, change trains there to Assisi).
ab0si Posted January 31, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 31, 2010 To follow up on euro cruiser's post ....the faster train trip will be 5 hours 16 minutes, so trying to do this in one day is REALLY pushing it.
kathle2036 Posted March 24, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted March 24, 2010 Saw a post about a group going from the Rome stop to Assisi. Have been away and did not follow up. Can I get some info on that trip?
Rare Hlitner Posted March 24, 2010 #5 Share Posted March 24, 2010 We really enjoyed spending a few nights in Assisi and recommend the town as a base rather then simply a day-trip destination. It is an interesting drive between Venice and Assisi with some interesting places along (or near that route) including Bologna and Ferrara. It also gets pretty close to San Marino which is a fun country to visit to say you have been to the place......but after an hour its time to head back to Italy. CathyCruises Posted March 25, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 25, 2010 Can't imagine a day trip to Assisi from Rome; it is doable by train but not worth the trouble as you would spend a huge amount of your day on the train. Assisi is wonderful, the cathedral is just amazing, but it is a long way from Rome! An overnight car trip from Venice would be fun to do, however. If you take the train to Florence, you are going way past Assisi and have to backtrack, but I'm not sure if there's an easier way. Italians love to backtrack. We were staying in San Gimignano and going to Rome; they wanted us to go 60 miles back to Florence before heading south again. I was able to find a more local and direct route for 1/3 the price, and only an hour longer, so it pays to check out all possible routes.
