Bot flies, Belize, and bug repelling

Watching DHC the other night, they did a run on Bot flies and how you can get them as parasitic passengers from MOSQUITO visits - and they were particularly mentioning Belize.:mad:

 

I mention this because I note in other threads mixed commentary about the need for bug repellent. This should help you in your decision making. The bot fly doesn't bit you, and the mosquito doesn't even need to bit you. However, the bot fly has deposited its fertilized eggs on the outside of the much smaller mosquito. The mosquito then loses some of them when it pays you a visit...with or without biting you. Bot fly larvae then migrate into your skin.:(

 

Not fun - IMHO - so an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!!!:eek: Keep them skeeters away!!!!!!:)

I make sure we take repellent WITH Deet when we visit Belize. Hate those Bot flies.

Having 4 kids, I was planning on bringing lots of bug spray with 100 percent deet, then I read on a Belize website that even when using this spray, you may still get a lot sandfly bites. Is this true?

 

I am more afraid of the Bot Flies than the Sand Flies, but I really want to prevent both.

 

What product is the best to use?

Haha, well don't get too freaked out by tv shows. Bot flies are usually found WAY inland in the jungle, not near the coast. Same with malaria risk. We always bring bug dope, just in case, but pretty much never use it on cruise ships. I have seen people with bot fly larva in them, it is pretty aweful. Honestly, when I have spent time in the jungle I've been more fearful of Bot Fly than Jaguars, etc:)
