taxi ride- is it safe?

Has anyone just rented a taxi and went around for 2 hours, just to see the island?

We are a group of women and want to feel safe.

My wife and I were there for a week last summer, and used mostly the same driver. His name was Martin (sorry, don't recall his last name) and he operated at the time out of Halcyon Cove resort where we stayed. He was great, my wife was convinced that he was our guardian angel (literally) while we were there. You can probably contact him thru Halcyon, as the drivers have a little office of sorts across the way from the main desk. He took us twice to Shirley Heights at the opposite end of the island. He's a native, very nice and knowlegable (and easier to understand than most Caribbeans :D) If I can find more info I'll post it. My DW probably still has his card somewhere.
