After our cruise ends in Civi., we plan to stay one extra day. Our plane leave FCO at 10:00am the next day. Do you suggest we go into Rome for the day and spend the night there...or would it be better to just go to a hotel near the airport for that day so we can leave early the next day?

We had the same situation and stayed at the Rome Airport Hilton. It worked out especially well because the Hilton provided a free shuttle bus back and forth to the city. We had a 10AM flight the next morning and the belhop arranged for their shuttle bus to take us to the international terminal. He suggested we be at the main entrance at 7AM since there was limited seating.

Hope this helps.

We had this dilema on our last cruise as well. Our flight was at 8:30AM however. Since this was our last chance to enjoy Rome, we chose to stay in the city. It allowed us to walk through all the beautiful piazzas and see all the fountains lit at night one last time. We were able to have a wonderful meal at the Piazza Navona before heading back to the "real world". Yes, we had an early wake up call, but decided it was worth it. It was a Saturday, so we weren't as worried about traffic. The van picked us up around 6am and we just beat all the crowds at the airport. By the time we got through security, we looked back and the lines were much longer. So, I say it all depends how you want to finish out your trip...

I think it depends on how badly you want to be in Rome. Having been to Rome a few times, we decided to stay at the Hilton airport for convenience but didn't want to 'waste' a day. So we opted to visit Ostia Antica, the port city of Ancient Rome. Ostia is about 15 minute drive from the Airport!

We left Civitacecchia at around 9 am, were in Ostia for 10 and then took a few hours to explore this ancient city. You could easily spend a whole day there as there are a lot to see, and there's also an amazing museum that we didn't have time to explore. Ostia was almost as impressive as Pompei for me and I've found that it's a site that is well worth visiting!

So that's another option!!
