la_croisiere_s'amuse Posted January 19, 2005 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2005 Okay, the general consensus seems to be that independent tours are a better experience than those you book through the cruise lines. However, I haven't been able to find any private excursions from Cozumel to Tulum, which DH and I really want to see. Has anybody had any experience and/or word of mouth to share? We sail in a week and a half, so time is getting short! :D
CozSally Posted January 19, 2005 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2005 Generally the tours go out of Playa del Carmen. When you arrive in Cozumel, head sirectly for the ferry pier and take the next boat to Playa del Carmen. Once you get there, there are people at the pier pulling together tours and loading buses. Enjoy!

zydecocruiser Posted January 19, 2005 #4 Share Posted January 19, 2005 The tours that I've seen from Cozumel tend to leave about 8am or earlier - too early for many cruise ships. http://www.cozumel.net/fun/aapt/tulum-xelha.htm http://www.cozumel-click.com/chichenitza.html http://www.cozumel.net/tours/xel-ha.htm There is one here that leaves at 10am 3 days a week, only to Tulum, or any day with enough people: http://www.cozumelinsider.com/MainlandRuins specifically: http://www.cozumelinsider.com/Tulumexp?From=Mainlandruins
la_croisiere_s'amuse Posted January 19, 2005 Author #5 Share Posted January 19, 2005 AWESOME! Thank you so much, zydeco. Man, I really have to wonder how people can cruise without these boards??
MandyCSP Posted January 23, 2005 #6 Share Posted January 23, 2005 If you go to the message boards for the Port of Call "Playa del Carmen" you will find lots of info on how to get to Tulum. We rented a car because we were making other stops as well but I have read that the buses are very inexpensive and reliable. When you get off your ship in Cozumel, take a taxi ($6) to the ferry pier. Buy a round trip ticket to Playa del Carmen and be sure to check the return schedule. The ferry can be quite rough so be prepared if you're at all prone to motion sickness. When you get off the ferry, go 2 blocks up, then 2 blocks to the right to find the bus station (or ask any of the very helpful security people you will see) We found the Mexican people to be very friendly, polite and not pushy. We didn't take the bus but I remember reading that you should buy a first class ticket to Tulum and get off at the Tulum Ruinas stop (which is one stop before the actual town). On the way back buy a 2nd class ticket because they run more frequently. The trip should take a little over an hour on the bus.

GREAT, thank you so much for the tip!! I had tried searching the Cancun boards without much luck. You're right, Playa del Carmen is the place for me! Using your info as a base, I was able to find all kinds of tips. We'll be in Cozumel a week from tomorrow, whoo-hooooo ! :D
