STL traveler Posted February 12, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2010 Has anyone rented scooters to get around the island? Is it safe and easy to get around the island? Any info would be helpful.

Rare MrSchwump Posted March 2, 2010 #3 Share Posted March 2, 2010 We were there last week and did see a number of tourists on scooters. It didn't look as scary as riding one on Grenada or Dominica, but it would still make me a little nervous. I guess it depends on how comfortable you are on a 2 wheeled vehicle. If you ride a lot at home, you'd probably be okay. The roads seemed pretty decent for a Caribbean island. Not real wide but it pretty good shape, generally. Rare crewsweeper Posted March 2, 2010 #4 Share Posted March 2, 2010 If you ride scooters or motorcycles at home, you shouldn't have any problems. But the roads are narrow with little or no shoulder and since there is basically one main road on the island's east side with branches to the West End and northern sections, and th eisland's main towns are on the east side, the road can be heavily traveled with local and tour related traffic. Not sure if there are scooters for rent up in Mahogany Bay where Carnival and Princess ships dock. Didn't see any in January, but wasn't looking. There is a place on the west end/west bay that rents scooters and bikes http://www.captainvans.com/index.htm Contact them for info.
Rochesterboatingdotcom Posted March 17, 2010 #5 Share Posted March 17, 2010 Just got back - we rented from Capt Vans, it was $46 for the day. The downside is that they only make one pickup, you have to be waiting for them at 8am. The rentals are in West End which is about a 20 min trip from Coxen Hole. They send you back to the ship at 3:30 or so, we finished riding and just took a cab back for $10. We drove about 50 miles, it was alot of fun. Crazy driving through Coxen Hole, cars, trucks, people and dogs all over. Watch out for unexpected speed bumps, they aren't usually marked and we saw someone dump thier scooter on one. We had a great day and would do it again.
silvercrikhix Posted March 30, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 30, 2010 We were in Roatan last Friday. We are avid touring motorcyclists. We would NOT recommend you do this. The roads are very windy and hilly. The traffic is very plentiful and they are speed demons. We saw many close calls with regular vehicles. To each their own, but, honestly we would NOT do this! Be forewarned and if you do this, you should definitely have some experience with scooters/motorcycles and crazy traffic!!!
